What do y'all wear on your legs when it rains?

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I ended up getting a pair of OR Packlite Gore-Tex pants. L was perfect for me. They pack up in their pocket and a really quite light. There are lighter ones out there but i would wonder about their durability (having read the reviews). I've worn the OR Packlite's in cold wet rain (10'c) for a few hours already and they performed well.

As with the first couple of contributors I have carried full waterproof trousers for years and rarely used them except for xc skiing. They're usually too hot and uncomfortable to bother....I've recently bought some cycling 3/4 length three layer shorts which I reckon will be the ducks guts. They extend just past the knee (ie to gaiter height) are incredibly light, reinforced and fairly well priced. Also very easy to walk in without the extra drag of the knee-foot section. I don't care if they're waterproof all day as I've never worried too much about wet knees. Another advantage is they allow me to wear a waist length jacket. Will wear them in the next tempest and let you know...

If I can get away with just shorts and gaiters I will! Pants are just another thing to get wet and have to carry (wet). If it is too cold, shorts and overpants are OK to keep the wind off. A waist length Goretex just drips onto whatever is below so I wear as little as possible.

I hardly use them either ... I mostly use either shorts and gaiters too i have thermal pants and the cheapo rainbird pants that i also consider to be disposable.... i like the sound of a pair of waterproof shorts - bearing in mind the title says RAIN not SNOW... I would prefer to spend $ on a good longish coat and just throw on the cheap pants occasionally
