TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

hi brett

have a look at the western mountaineering flash jacket with the hood - around the $250 - around 250gm - very light but havent tested in anything near negatives and not sure houw it would do

very light weight fabric which is ok as you wont be walking in it

as with all WM gear very well made with excellent down (apparently)

Just confirming the price? Is this direct import from USA as PP had a vest and it was way more expensive. Love WM but not sure on the sizing. I have very long arms, makes it easier to get to the wallet and at that price very tempting

Cheers Brett

Brett,
Down jackets
The ones I was talking about are the like of the Western Mountaineering Hooded Flash Jacket , about 260g in M, the Patagonia Down Sweater, about 312g or the Mont Bell Down Inner (210g) or "parka" (with hood) at also about 260g.
All of these are a replacement for a heavy fleece type jacket not for well below zero temps. (the compress much smaller)
For that you go up to something like the WM Vapour jacket at around 450g.
The lighter versions have 15/20 denier fabric , so very fragile .
Here is the Flash compared with a 550 g fleece jacket. The Flash is warmer (the hood makes a big difference) about half of the weight and stored size of the fleece.
With storage sack , not included but recommended, (mine is by ID , a bit more than twice that "compressed size") is 290g.
I shove it into the sack and let it find its own space inside the pack. (IE, not compressed as in the pic...)

Thanks for the heads up Frank,

Do you still see any situations where you'd still use the fleece anymore? Those WM jackets make the fleece seem redundant except to hike in... but even then it might still be too warm?

Just personal preference. If I can have similar or better performance from something that packs smaller (like the Neo Air for example...) then I go for it . Smaller stuff, smaller pack, lighter pack.
So my layering system is something like : wool base layer, nylon shirt, wool jumper (possum/merino or angora) rain smock (Montane) and that WM Flight. That is ok for me down to around -3/5 c.
For warmer weather I forgo either the jacket or the jumper . (my smock can take the other layers under it)
If not sure of the environment , that I take an eVent jacket instead of the smock. (it has cordura nylon patches in the right places)
On an overnighter or three day trip because I have the space I often end up adding more clothing than I need ( like shopping before dinner, bad idea but you do it every time...)
Fleece, or a shell, would be usefull for bushbashing, not my cup of tea ( apart from when I have to)
