Anyone 'regressed' to CCF?

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I have 2m of 3mm CCF bought at a Clark Rubber store. It may have been about $17/m.

I have the zlite bum pad too. It is pretty small. Maybe ok under the feet or head when lying down. A cheaper version is offered by ultralight hiker .com.au

Yes, I have the same version of the sit pad that UL Hiker sells, I got mine about 3 years ago from Aliexpress for less than $3 incl freight, pre Covid times obviously! I got one for me and each of the kids and they have lasted well and weigh about 28g. I figure I could use it for my hips if I ever get bold enough to just sleep on the Thinlight.

I regressed.
Exped flexmat plus M the blue one.
Just spent 7 nights on it no inflatable mat.
Was OK. Kinda like an unpleasant therapeutic massage at times, otherwise surprisingly good.

It is bulky and almost half a kilo but will never leak :)

Woo Neo!
Yes, the dependability factor is well...dependable
I have a section of the orange coloured exped mat, would be keen to try/feel the blue version. It looks super nice and thick.

I am getting fancy tonight, 8 panels of Nemo Switchback with 4x panels switchback overlaid, but not interlocking, in the hip area- super cushy in front of the aircon.

Well I'm perplexed.
Got a 4mm Nike mat from Big Woop a few years ago and cut it down to 1200mm.
Paid top dollar ($30) for a Roman branded CCF foamie a couple of years ago and cut it down to 1200.

Now with the Exped blue I'm tempted to trim in down.
Have always favoured the XS air mats at 1200 or 4 foot length. That's Nemo and STS. Expeds shortest was an M length. Have tried them all except Thermarest.

Being tall a ~1800 length etc isn't a full body mattress anyway.

Should I cut the Exped blue in half!?!

Do it!
Lamont and I went splitsies on the orange Exped Flex Mat. I can use it for my shoulders and hips with my GG thinlight over the top which gives me a sub 200g weight penalty for my sleep mat.

MsMudd I did it.

Half was borderline for my torso length, probably fine but I cut this at 8/4 panels.

Edit, the four panel piece is up for grabs on the PIF topic.

That is a very sensible split. I did that with one of my switchbacks .
8 panels for me is full length other than my feet.

If I didn't have an outrageous collecting of various ccfs I would grab the section. I am someone will be very happy with ut

Sad but true I now feel a personal challenge to harden up and get comfortable sleeping on just a foamie.
Tonight it's a Roman black roll cut short.
Comfy Aldi contour travel pillow.
Training myself to be a back sleeper again.

I'd grab it purely for Murray Cod reasons and store it for a rainy day but it's a wee bit short. Six panels -and I'd have it.

I can't hack anything less than full length, no matter what the type of mattress is.

If my feet are on hard ground with essentially no insulation, I am uncomfortable and my feet get cold.

I'm loving the simplicity of just a foamie, pillow-in-a-buff, pee bottle, torch and quilt in a UL tent.

Three years on, still rocking the switchback.
Only minor drawback is I don't love it being stored outside my pack if likely to get caught in shrub. Fine on track though.

Anyone else CCF'ing on?

Ahh yeah. Was sure I still had one short air mat but it's missing. Eyes on a lower priced shorty that is briefly back in stock... I don't get out as much so can handle roughing it or enjoy the flatness of a foamie for a few nights.

They are awkward, half folded they still don't usually fit inside nicely, probably ok in a 60L.

I have just the one inflatable left too, my daughters. She went on a trip a few weeks ago though and elected to take my "foamie", probably a case of CB *&$# blowing it up on her behalf rather than adoration for a flat sleeping surface

Last year I tried a cheap "Jungle Leopard" fold up mat on an overnighter. These things are cheap as on Aliexpress, and it's a bit wider than the Switchback so suits my proportions better. It was warm enough, but definitely not enough comfort for me as a side sleeper. Next test will be to buy another, cut a sit pad length off it, shove that under my hips and see if that helps.

It got me thinking though, because I can remember using CCF mats in the past down to well below freezing and not feeling unduly cold. Conversely I've used SIM's with supposedly good R values at 0 and they didn't seem to insulate nearly as well. I'd be interested in hearing what temperatures you have used your Switchback in.

Nothing too cold on its own, but have used it in light snow locally with just my GG Thin light folded over on top from my shoulders to hips.
Used it on its own last week in Mt Field NP, but it's Summer and although the weather came in, was definitely above freezing.

The R rating is not that great on the Switchback, but you may have a point, JMcJ - I have been colder on inflatables
