TIP: The online
Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Anyone who uses/has used satphones extensively? Noticed any abnormal messaging or call issues in the last 18mths? (particularly with the iridium/telstra system)

No probs with Iridium in NZ 8-18/2, other than the normal crap reception!
The iridium go I hired was a much more useful device than a sat phone.

Thanks Andrew, mixed bag of experiences around the net, have you used these on a Telstra account? (Iridium claim it's a Telstra issue).

If anyone is using a SIM in iridium other than a dedicated Telstra (TMS) satellite plan (ie. $35p/m+), it would be wize to continually check it's still functional (out of a mobile network range) before a remote walk.
