TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Radio reception OT? - Footy tragics

Wed 09 Sep, 2009 8:20 am

Heading off on the OT next Friday 18th and are keen to attempt to listen to the Geelong / whoever preliminary final as we are Geelong footy club tragics....

Has anyone had experience getting am or fm radio reception around Windemere Hut? Reckon we will be there on the Sat night when I think it is scheduled.

I know it is a bit pathetic but that's life!

We were able to listen to 1 minute out of 5 in 2007 when Geelong beat Collingwood in the prelim from the Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island in FNQ. That was a great experience and omen so would love to repeat it!

Cheers and, of course, Go Cats!

I used to carry one, has been a long time. I seem to remember it working on the scarp north of the hut but cant recall if it did at the hut itself? It likely would (as did cdma) on the hill behind the hut.... (good spot for a 'picnic' )

I'm a former Geelong boy myself, but not a fan of the footy team.

Somehow, my youngest became a fan, though. He was so stoked, the day we were seeing a relative off at Launnie airport, and the Cats got off the plane. He got to shake hands with Gary Ablett and Mark Chapman. That made his year. :P

Speaking of Gary Ablett, nice bloke, ran into him at Rod Laver Arena at a concert once and had a little chat!

Sorry, can't help you with any advice re the radio reception though!

I've tried to listen to a few grand finals from Lake Will walking out along the Overland Track. Reception at Waterfall Valley was poor to none existent. It was very patchy around the side of Cradle. But I have got radio near Granite Tor! Consider a very good aerial and maybe going up onto the hill behind the hut.

Cheers,

To continue the tradition of off-topic replies in this thread, I'll just say that one of the main reasons I walk is to get away from all that "real world" stuff ;)

Seriously though, hope you're taking earphones... I'd be miffed to say the least if I was trying to relax in camp and someone in the next tent turned on the footy commentary :!: OTOH, with the way the OT is these days many hut occupants might welcome some electronic entertainment...

Agree Singe , know this is a bit pathetic but it IS only for a couple of hours out of the 150 plus we will be out :D

Yeah I know what you mean about the noise. Discretion will be the name of the game - hate to give anyone else the runs.

More confident we will get some sort of reception now we know the game is at night.

Thanks for everyone's advice

GO CATS!

Hah Reminds me of listening to the 2008 GF whilst doing the Thorsburn. The reception was better than your experience Frank though the result was not as good.

I remember a few of us tragics grumbling that our mate booked the walk without realising it clashed with the GF.

anyway definitely no bushwalking this weekend- except across Yarra Park to the G. GO SAINTERS

You're lucky Frank's 5 days into the Overland track, or he would probably have something to say about that!
(This post intentionally NAVY BLUE!)

Don't pick on me for my team or I might have to use my moderator abilities inappropriately - we're talking football here!

Oh yeah - He must be going South/ North on the OT to be at Windemere Sat Night - Strollers will only miss him by 1 Day.
Might have to leave a message for him in the log book at Ronnie Creek when we come out. :D

Well we made it out without running into the Strollers (we went North - South)

We DID see some tinsel at Waterfall Valley hut so may have been a remanent of the recent BWT Christmas in July trip!

Can report we had radio reception (mainly am) across the whole of the OT at night. Once it got dark all those ABC stations across the country sent us their signal! (plus a host of others I was not interested in listening too) Often lost signal but just tuned into another ABC station - conditions were light snow, heavy cloud cover, rain etc

We listened to the Preliminary Final at Windemere on some little speakers I had carried - only ones in the hut that night (and 2 other nights) Nice to flog Collingwood and know we were heading into the GF on a roll....

Got back into Geelong late Friday, GF eve and then had about 30 rampent cats supporters around to watch the footy on GF day. Becomes a bit blurry after that but I DO KNOW it took us till 6:30 last night to clean up the house.....

Will make a few comments in other posts around the forum about the trip.

Finally, and VERY HAPPILY, GO CATS!
