TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

How do I wash my tent?

Thu 24 Sep, 2009 9:24 pm

Hi all I was doing a over nighter Tuesday night with all the rain and dust now my tent is covered in the brown dust that has covered the rest on Sydney. Can you just wash the fly with soapy water or does that do something to the water proofing?

Humpo,
As it is only dried topsoil I suspect that if you set it up and hit it with a strong hose it will just wash off ,happened a couple of weeks ago in Tassie and that's what I did with our Cars, lets just hope you have not left it too long and the oxides in the soil have not started to do any damage however I believe that your tent fly has a Siliconised treatment so you should be right.

I have hand-washed my tent a few times in the bath tub using pure soap (dissolved Lux flakes) and it has come out looking clean and still just as waterproof.

Thanks guys. At least I know now that it can handle some serious rain and wind.

You're tent should have come with some instructions on how to wash it... they'll either be on the box, or on a tag (usually inside the inner) like clothes have.
But as corvus said, it's only soil so you could just soaked it in the bath and give it a wipe down with a chux.

I was wondering about that myself; thought the view looked familiar. Been there a couple of times, last one we found an obscure track that runs down there from near Mt Keira. Was a long time between visits though and unfortunately Staffords Farm now seems to be overrun with feral weeds :(.
