TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

TENT ERECTED EITHER OUTSIDE OR INSIDE?

Rather than spending days searching has anyone ever heard of a small 2 man that can be erected from either the outside or inside. ie has provision for poles in or out so if it's raining you can get in the tent and erect from inside?

Thanks Brett,
I think the tent collection is up around five or six now and I just want a little one for me while walking. The only time I'm likely to put it up is if it's peddling down rain ergo unwrap, climb in and put up while inside. As a woman this seems terribly logical - my evil didn't come up, maybe it will when I post.

My Coleman Phad is completely erected from the outside, so you stay in your gear until the tent is erected, and you can take off wet gear in the large vestibule and not drip on the inside. I know the Avior is the same design. The Phad is very siimlar to the Hilleberg tents in general design.

There are 3 types of pitching
1 - inner first suspend the inner from the poles then throw the fly over the top
2 - Fly first usually the poles are in sleeves and then hang the inner.
3- Put the two up together

Some tents will do all three - multi pitch ie Macpac microlight
The advantage of 2 your inner doesnt fill up with water if it is raining heavily.

I have 2 tents they are both fly first - or together. Wilderness Equipment First Arrow (2-3 man) & Macpac Microlight (1 man

I usually keep the the microlight together but if I am packing up and it is very wet I will pull the inner down first.

Other tents that are fly first
Wilderness Equipment Second Arrow (2 man)

Wilderness Equipment tents are readily available in Australia.

This site gives some good overall points about tents and what to look for.

Thanks for brands Roger. I should have said "before it starts piddling" so you get in still dry or with few drops rather than being caught outside when it starts bucketing still trying to put up. But yes fly first I think would be best option although poking poles through sleeves in wind can be challenging.

Hi turtle,

I know exactly the tent you are thinking of, tho they are single walled.

You can throw them out, climb inside & put the poles in the inside, yes it does sound very logical.

The group who did the Alexander Pearce Memorial Overland Crossing
http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1089&p=11031&hilit=cannibal#p11031
used one & had only good things to say about them - given they had nearly 2 weeks of solid rain I'd say that's pretty positive feedback.

They are also not that cheap.

Another company below who does a very similar type of tent, i/e single walled, pitch inside.

Not sure i've been all that much help?

Stuart.

After very quick look, I think the Ahwahnee would be what I would like, so thanks Stuart. And yes that's a serious price tag. But nice to know I'm not alone in my thinking
