Over pants and gaiters

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Over pants and gaiters

Postby Mafeking09 » Thu 05 Jan, 2012 9:42 am

Looking at replacing my worn out gaiters and o pants. Any views on the new Macpac gear? I'm in Tasmania so conditions are tough AND wet.

The pants I was looking at were the MAcpac Resolution Pants eVent. The Gaiters were the MAcpac Torre Gaiters. Funny how you get picky about this stuff but the gaiters have to be bulletproof (including stirrups) and o pants light AND tough and stay up!

Any feedback welcome.

Try looking at the One Planet gaiters. Gotta love something with "industrial" in their name.

Ditch the O/pants, they only last 1 trip and there are other things to spend your hard earned $ on.

Love that. And they are also described as "bomb proof". Brilliant.

Sea to Summit Quagmire gaiters are pretty good too as a third option ;)

The S2S gaiters have a circular patch in the instep, seam grip all the sewing for this part before going into the field. The patch is a good thing but the sewing fails (it has a hard life) and needs a bit of back up.

Macpac Torre gaiters are a new product and are not yet in stock.

Bugger. Old ones died in last trip. When are Torres due? They are listed online?

Not sure about those, but I have the cheaper Macpac Reflex overpants, and they have survived some very harsh off track treatment. They were quite waterproof and breathable for a while until the scrub ruined them. I like them and will probably buy another pair to replace them once they become more trashed.

In the past I have used WE bush gaiters that have given good service. They have a stiff canvas upper, shock cord under the boot to hold the gaiter tightly in place and an easy system to open and close, even when muddy. I don't mind replacing the shock cord from time to time. I need new gaiters and will be looking for them again, if they are still available.

OR Rampant overpants with full side zips, worked well in Tassie as did the OR Crocodile gaiters.

Kiwis swear by their Cactus gear including gaiters for being built tough and you can always get them online

Just be wary if you have a large boot though as I find they will not fit my EU48 climbing boots

I found that OR Crocodile Expeditions were ok in Tassie.
They're also *&%$#! good in snow.
