TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Tents- Outer pitch first

Just wondering on anyone thoughts on outer pitch tents Vs standard inner first. With our weather changing back towards more rain, I am keen to hear peoples opinions and experiences re both types of set ups.

Hi, I presume your referring to, tents with the option of pitching the outer fly first than attaching the inner tent afterwards?

I own a Hilleberg Tent, Recently returned from The Great Walk hike at Fraser Island and we had rain for 2 days.
I packed my inner separate to the fly. Fly with Poles and Pegs packed at top of my pack for easy access. Arriving at Camp on one particular day at Fraser Island it was raining so heavy, I could not see 20 metres in front of me from the rain. Erected the outer tent with Groundsheet attached, (I purchased the Optional Groundsheet for my Hilleberg tent, and I must say, I think it's the best option available for the Hilleberg tents). Within a few minutes I had the outer fly with a dry groundsheet erected, I than crawled into tent and opened my pack, erected the Inner Tent, all dry. The next day I first removed inner tent, packed that into my Pack than packed the wet outer fly on top of my pack under the main lid.

Go for the tents with the option of erecting the outer fly first, you will not regret it. Makes life while out camping so much easier. and you have the option of sleeping in the tent without the inner attached if it's a very warm night, particularly with the Hilleberg tents as there fly's go all the way to the ground, Not half a foot up, like a lot of tents do these days.

In my experience buying a tent you can pitch outer first guarantees it won't rain while you are setting it up. It used to always rain when I was trying to set up (or more often take down) my old inner first tent. Now in over 2 years I have never once needed to pitch it in any proper rain. It rains after it is up but never during. Still I wouldn't buy a tent without the feature.

I agree, we have been spoilt over the last 10 years or so, as it has not rained very much and we have been lulled into this pattern. But I truely believe the years ahead are going to be quite wet. Hilleberg tents are quite expensive aren't they?

WE runs a outer pitch first system, or can be configured to pitch with the inner already fitted, and they have a full range of spare parts in Australia, and warrenty back up.

My Scarp 1 pitches with inner and outer attached, never gets wet inside and takes about 2 minutes - the dual vestibules give me one for dirty/muddy/wet gear and one for cooking and entry/exit - loving it.

Hillebergs do cost a few dollars, but I really think you get what you paid for, I think there worth every dollar.

It appears to always rain when I go camping. particularly when I put a tent up or down.

Tents with an Integral pitch ability are the way to go they give you all of the options ie inner +fly ,fly +inner or both together :)
Some Macpac,Hilliberg,Tarptent ,WE tents( and a few others) give you this option worth while checking them out.
