TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Paddy Pallin Pack

Tue 05 Oct, 2010 6:55 pm

Inspired by Journeyman's Old School Paddy Pallin tent, I thought I should dig up some pictures of my oldest pack.
This pack belonged to my girlfriends grandfather before he passed away and since then had been in the attic at her Grandmas. Her Grandma was more then happy to gift me the pack as I was so excited about seeing it. It was used just after WWII for snow touring down in the snowies but Sue(Grandma) think that he had the pack before the war started. It does remind me of a WWI packs Ive seen so I recon its mid 30s- early 40's.

Thanks Evan, nice stuff.
Paddy Pallin in the City (Melbourne) has another version of that. I'll take a shot of it when I go there next (if I remember)
I had something very similar before my teens , then one with an A frame attached. (pure Luxury)

(Had a look at your site, great to see someone local making this stuff.)

I had one very similar to that about 40 years ago. It had four pockets across the back but was otherwise almost identical.

These packs had one fatal design flaw. If the rope at the top broke......

My pack like this (which I still have somewhere) - was the model that only had one back pocket - so was better for pushing through scrub. A good small pack for weekend or long-weekend trips. I used it for many years.

What a great looking pack eh. I love the leather hipbelt. Look just as comfy as my One Planet!

Here's a photo of the Paddy Pallin Packs in action, about to start the Overland track in January 1959, with the original Waldhein Chalet in the background. Photo by Iris Buck of Devonport.

I scanned my 1969-1970 vintage Paddy Pallin catalogue's packs pages to place in this thread, but decided to put the eight page catalogue in its own topic here - viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5040
