TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Where to purchase hiking equipment?

Mon 16 Aug, 2010 12:07 pm

I am new to hiking and firstly need to get me head around the gear I need and secondly, where to buy good gear which is quite reasonably priced in Melbourne or internet?

Can anyone help with where I can buy reasonably priced equipment for my 5 day Overland walk? Thanks

Hi Zochca,

I notice you're in Melbourne.

Hire companies sell good quality, bombproof, ex-hire gear that still works. I'd buy that (very cheap) until you're sure that you want to walk regularly.

I use Holiak hire, who are based in Melbourne, but there are others:

Hi mate,
Do a lap of Little Bourke st in the city. Most of the major players are there (I think macpac is around the corner on Elizabeth). There are also a few shops out in Collingwood on Smith st (some of these clearance stores so you could get a bargain or two).

Cheers.

Main Peak and Paddy Pallins both have a really good online business.

I get most of my stuff through them. Main Peak do an automatic 10% off because you're buying online. Paddy Pallins you have to pay $30 I think to become a member and then you get 10% off.
