TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

how much fuel does a small trangia use?

Mon 15 Feb, 2010 6:57 pm

hi all,

i'm taking my small trangia for a 5-6 days walk and was wondering how much meth to take. while i am aware that that will depend on personal preferences re. the food i'd be happy with a rough estimate.

from experience i usually drink a cuppa in the morning, no hot breakfast, a cuppa when i arrive at camp, and of course dinner. maybe i'd throw 2-3 soups in the mix and a further 2-3 cuppas.

so far i always hiked with other people and more than one stove, therefore i never really paid close attention to the amount of fuel i actually took. but now since i will be going by myself that becomes a question to be answered :)

thanks

Hi Pinarello,
I went with three others on the overland. and within 6 days, we used up 2 and a bit bottles of methylated spirits. However, we were very very liberal with the amount of fuel we used as we soon realised that the three bottles of meth that we brought was way too much. Each day, we had hot drinks in the morning, for lunch and dinner. We used up 2 tranjia pots of water for dinner meal each night . We even got to cook pancakes fore lunch and toasted the tortillas we brought.

If this doesn't help, i did an experiment before the trip and came up with the following data:
to boil one large pot of water (1.5-2litres) - i used up 40mL of methylated spirits and it took 10mins (with the flame at its largest).

Hope this helps!

We did the overland in 6 days and brought two bottles, but used less than one. But I have to say that our meals are all just :add hot water" so no simmer. We had normally 1 cup of coffee each in the morning and a tea at after dinner, and usually no hot breakfast. We realiseed that you can save a lot of fuel by leaving the simmerring opened on the burner.
I think with one bottle you will be fine.

I think Trangia used to state 1/2 liter per person per week. Looked on their site but couldnt find the relevant info........but guess what I did find for trangia fans?

They have a NEW updated multifuel burner, the old one was just an optimus nova add on, the new one looks like a primus himalaya stove add on that burns most liquid fuels AND butane gas. I wonder now long before it gets out here in the shops to have a look at!

Our long-term averages:

On your own: 100ml per day, 75ml if you're fairly frugal.

150ml per day if 2 persons are sharing same drinks/meals etc.

These leave a little bit to spare but not much.

I haven't used the trangia on a long walk for a while, but I had a 1 litre bottle I used to use for long walks. Agree with DonQx, 100-150ml per day sounds about right.

Or you could get the gas burner. A large canister lasts for ages and ages . . .
