TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Tarptent Notch: how to keep upright?

Wed 24 Feb, 2021 5:58 pm

Hello guys,

I just came across this log:

https://www.geargrams.com/list?id=4015

However no trekking poles are listed, so how on earth did they manage to keep the tent upright?

I'm very keen on this tent as it's 800g and need it for this year's Larapinta hike.

I don't want to buy a trekking pole to keep the thing upright, maybe there is another lighter option.

Thanks for the input :)

That gear list includes two extra guy lines. Maybe they tied the apexes to some branches above.

I don't think there are enough suitable trees for this to work at some of the Larapinta campsites, nor are there many thin-but-sufficiently-long sticks lying around to substitute for poles. Unfortunately.

Either that or they are using the Helinox Walking Poles listed under tools.

Ah yeah! I missed the walking poles for some reason. So for this particular tent and to keep weight to a minimum what is the lightest pole or device you'd recommend to keep the tent upright?

Cheers :)

Tarptent sell poles specifically for each of their tents.

The poles for the Notch are 107g each, not sure you will find anything much lighter than that.

Tarptent does have a lighter version called Substitute Poles (9mm) , however I would strongly recommend to get the Vertical type because they are much stronger.
At 12.4 mm those Vertical poles are very similar in strength to the light weight trekking poles .

I had no idea they also sell support poles. Thanks again! :)
