Could somebody please give me their recommendation for a good fish and chips shop in Burnie? (near the centre of the city, or just to the east of the city would be preferable).

I've heard that APPM do chips but I'm not sure about the fish?

Fish frenzy on the Beach or the Octupuss Cafe across the road I have heard are good.

Sounds good. What road(s) are they on?

Fish Frenzy on the waterfront; North Terrace (where the surf club used to be), and the Octupus Cafe is on Mount Street I think? (near the petrol station)

Occy 4 Mount Street, FF in the new Surf club complex Nth Terrace they are almost opposite each other never eaten in either but read good reports so don't blame me if its not to your standard.

I've never eaten at Fish Frenzy but have heard good things. I get fish and/or chips at the Octopus from time to time because they are very nice chips and not badly priced. They do a $6.50 fish and chips which isn't a bad (albeit basic) meal - although a bit smaller than it used to be.

I think Fish Frenzy is a bit more classy (and maybe more expensive) - thats the impression I get walking past.

I think there is a place out at Wivenhoe as well where my boss reckons they do good atlantic salmon and chips, once again I've ner been there.

Fish Frenzy is right across North Terrace practically on the beach in the surf club building with the curved roof (straight off end of Mount Street).

Also be aware North Terrace is all dug up at the moment and is one way (eastbound) from the Alexander Road intersection to the Wilmot Street intersection (by which time it has changed name to Marine Terrace not north terrace).

Thanks all for the advice. I'll be passing through Burnie tonight, and buying fish and chips for my wife's Auntie to have dinner there on the way to our friend's at Wynyard. This gives me a good opportunity to try out the forums new 'map' button...

I've been to Fish Frenzy once.
I prefer the Wivenhoe one, but it is marginal. Last time we went into Wivenhoe we left again and ended up buying food from somewhere else.
If I am in Wivenhoe, I would usually go to Delish next door. It's a deli that has all sorts of goodies, and now that they have tables & chairs there and do food to eat in, it's even better!!
If you like Blue cheese, try the Roquefort, but at close to $90 a kilo, be prepared to empty the wallet. It's worth it, though. And I'm no blue fan.

There's also a bakery there, and Sharmans butcher where, last week, I purchased the nicest eye fillet I have had in a long time. Got them cut an inch thick, cooked them to medium rare in an open pan and you could cut them like butter! Sorry to all the vegetarians out there...

Back on topic, if you were going to Wynyard you'd be better to go to Buccaneers in Wynyard. In the past we have gone for a drive or a ride on the bike to Wynyard to get their food, then up to Table Cape to eat it.

But now that we have discovered the fish and chips from Hurseys in Stanley, there is NO compromise.
Too far to travel? Try their flake then tell me it's too far to travel!

I initially stopped in Wivenhoe at 'Fish on the Edge', but it appeared to be more of a cafe/restaurant, and too expensive for take aways for me. So we then went into Burnie and found the 'Octopus'.

The Octopus is excellent! We were very happy with our battered fillets of Atlantic Salmon that we got there, and the service was also very good. I'd highly recommend it to anyone (although the roadworks made access a little difficult.

(We didn't get take aways in Wynyard because we were eating them with my wifes Auntie in Burnie before continuing on to Wynyard later in the evening).

We aren't big fish fans at home, but knowing that it is very healthy, we occasionally make some effort to eat fish (that isn't battered and deep fried). This is usually in the form of atlantic salmon steaks on the BBQ. This is even great for non-fish people!
