That happy place, when you don't need new gear...

Postby Neo » Thu 16 May, 2019 10:00 pm

This year I have reached that happy place.
My kit is good.
I might pick up some small item on a whim, retail urge.
Overall the gear bug has gone into crysalis (is that the term)...

I did upgrade my tent and sleeping bag, added some rope hardware, a super comfy harness and bought a mini Opinel knife. Nothing too serious! My kit is good ;)

As soon as I get to the Post Office this morning I will have joined you in that happy place! Picking up my DCF tarp from the US.

My gear now is the right balance between comfort and weight (for me) so now I can have a period of just using what I’ve got rather than looking for the next big thing. Hopefully not too much will break/wear out so I won’t have big replacement bills.

On second thoughts, maybe I need a food dehydrator!

Couldn't tempt you with a Merkur Solingen Bakelite safety razor @ 15g with blade by any chance?

A must have for the discerning gentlemen bushwalker. ;)

No but a camping cheese grater might do it!

If you keep telling yourself you don't need new gear you may actually believe it [WINKING FACE]

Lost too many blades lately. Just use a $20 foldable these days but yeah, a grater is not needed.

And then I bought 72m of rope and a tarp/bag!

Nothing else 'on-the-list' though ;)

Still in my happy place.

Although... recent acquisitions are a coconut bowl, z seat, luci emergency lantern (small, 72g and has a red light!), petzel e-light, uniqlo ul puffy with a hood $80!
Roman palm 4 sleeping bag as a summer knock-about. 1.1kg but who cares when everything else is light.

Probably something else too

I still keep looking but end up coming to the same conclusion, I don't need it so don't buy. I have been looking for more environmentally friendly gear and did end up buying a Reefknot Canvas 23L bag because my WT Sondor has got too big for overnighters which is what I mainly do. https://www.reefknotbags.com/listing/678408047/bushcraft-pack-14oz-canvas-backpack-23l
For anyone that is interested, the Reefknot weights 850g but like Neo says, if you're SUL, adding an extra ~350g isn't a big deal.

A bit like Neo with the coconut bowl, thats were I'm heading these days, going for feel-good and were possible, stuff that is a bit more environmentally friendly. Bought a Patagonia jacket a while ago because it's made of recycled plastic and looks good, so like my new Reefknot, I get that feel-good feeling every time I use it.

Thumb compass with degrees on the way.
Some other whims and smaller upgrades this year (face slap) :)

One seldom actually needs new gear. What one wants is a different matter.
