A wonderful interview.

When writer Kate Legge's marriage broke up after almost 30 years, she went walking on Tasmania's Cradle Mountain.

There she discovered the story of pioneering naturalists Gustav Weindorfer and Kate Cowle.

From vastly different backgrounds but with a shared enthusiasm for botany and mountain climbing, Kate and Gustav fell in love in 1903.

After climbing Cradle Mountain together, they decided to open a guest house in that remote and beautiful place.

Gustav built ‘Waldheim’ with his own hands, cutting the planks of King Billy pine and carting up the cast iron bath and wood stove on his back.

He and Kate advocated to have this pristine wilderness protected, imagining it as a sanctuary for generations to come.

Just discovered this great novel! (Kindred) A great read which has alerted me to much of the history of this area which I knew little about. Having walked the area it makes it all a lot clearer.
