QTOPO and iPhone ?

Postby bauplenut » Tue 12 Sep, 2017 8:29 am

Is there an iPhone app that will work with QTOPO mapping fairly seamlessly for offline bushwalk GPS / map view navigating ? Android has a good app Backcountry Navigator that can use QTOPO mapping, what about iPhone ?

My understanding is that QTOPO is not tile server format therefore not compatible with OSM type apps.NSW there is a topo tile server format but not QLD ? Apps I have looked at are tile server / OSM type.

Looked at Handy GPS. Anthony advises Handy GPS can use any tile server which has the format used by Open Street Map (OSM) tile servers. In NSW, there is a topo map tile server which HandyGPS can use, but unfortunately as far as can tell, QTOPO does not support this format.

Other options ?

Regards

You can do it easily using MotionX or Gaia, two apps that I regularly use. For MotionX you need to purchase the Custom Maps feature for a few dollars. Then for the URL enter

https://gisservices.information.qld.gov ... rver/tile/[Z]/[Y]/[X]

I use Backcountry Navigator on my Android phone and it works a treat - I purchase the full version but the free version also works well and I used that for a long time. I just don't trust the phone's compass.
I also use Gaia (which is available on iOS also) but prefer QTopo maps.

Backcountry Navigator are developing a cloud-based application that will work on all platforms (Backcountry Navigator XE). Unfortunately it will be a subscription based app like most software these days - https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/back ... 7395453/ks

Could you please update that link? It's broken.

Sorry for the late reply gbagua, just saw your question. The URL I gave is not a link, but the data to enter into the Custom Maps URL field in order to set up QTOPO as a custom map source. Type in the full bit that the forum software displays as a URL, and follow it immediately with [Z]/[Y]/[X].
