Austrian Alps seeking advice

Postby Karin » Wed 27 Dec, 2017 5:31 pm

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help... I am in the very early planning stages of a hike in July 2018. I'm wanting to do a 3 or 4 day hike in the Austrian Alps with my 66-year-old Mum and my 8-year-old son. Because of their ages and fitness levels we would be restricted to changes in altitude of less than 1000m and distances of less than 10km each day. We want to stay in huts each night (although they don't need to be flash). We want something a bit off the tourist track but also not dangerous (nothing we would need to cross glaciers/ use ropes etc for). We are considering the Salzburg area. Does anyone have any information/ advice that could get us started?

Cicerone press has many books on hut to hut walking in Austria, its a good place to start. Another good option is to do a series of overnight trips to huts in different spots. Ie. get chair lift up, walk to a hut and use as a base for day walks, walk back to road. You can chose your weather that way. https://www.cicerone.co.uk/search?q=Austria
