Does anyone know what this Fungus is?

Postby neilmny » Fri 16 Jun, 2017 8:14 pm

Seen and photographed today under heavy tea tree cover on a westerly slope Estate Spur Fraser Park.
Quite a bit of light in the area but probably little if any at all direct sunlight would hit them.
From a distance I thought it was large bones of some sort but as can be seen, not so.
The "What is it_1" was about 20cm across, quite unusual and strangely attractive to my eyes (in an arte farte sort of way that is).
There was 2 others slightly smaller maybe 12cm across and that was all that we saw of them all day.

I'm keen to know as well. I saw one about 35cm across as well as some smaller ones. Looked like the ruffled hem of a Spanish dress so we called it a ' rumba fungi' :)

It reminds me of one of those weird underwater creatures...... a "Spanish Dancer".

One of the links refers to the distribution as cosmopolitan which seems to mean it can be found world wide.
It certainly looks very similar to the pictures.

Sorry Neil. Just saw this reply. Can't remember where I saw it but I did read it occured in WA. Couldn't find any reference to it occuring in Vic. Known distribution is one of the first things I look at when trying to ID a plant (or fungi in this case). Agree though that it does look like L. giganteus.

I haven't been able to find anything that remotely resembles it anywhere else.
I wonder if I sent the picture to PV. They might be able to identify it.

They identified a prickly, nasty looking plant I found in the Dandenongs. On looks I was convinced it didn't belong so sent the pictures to them.
Turned out to be Forest Nightshade and common enough.

Maybe these guys could help.....

Thought it was a patch for the backpack... but their pin stands out from the crowd.
Maybe they should have a patch in their online shop.

Try Fungimap.

Edit: ofuros beat me to it. I think they would be more reliable than PV staff (who I don't have a lot of confidence in when IDing flora)
