You may like my gear. Boots, at least five years old, held together with bits of cord where the D rings have fallen off. GPS, don't have one. Pack, over 30 years old, refuses to die. Me, older still, also undead.

Right on perfectlydark my old gear and me have seen a lot together in the dark, cold ,wet, sun ,snow, wind ,hail and all sorts of weather.
We have covered a vast amount of miles in our time together and have both broken down at times but always managed to get up and keep going.
Who hasn't got a favourite bit of gear they wont leave home without it might be old ,bashed up ,far from pretty but its mine and it still works.

Yep that can be a tad uninteresting.....but maybe the trick is to try to guide the conversation in a new direction
Just don't enter into the discussion, talk about the view, the weather...........
As far as gear goes.......no one is going to be impressed with mine.....not even me  but it's mine and I like it so stuff anyone who judges it as inferior.

It wasn't me that wrote it. I can't remember reading it in there, so it might have been after my trip in. I'm sure I didn't get all of the mat.

Next pet hate: maps that don't label the true summit as such. I'm 90%sure I didn't climb the real guardians but the complete clag stopped me knowing.

Another (more annoyance though): people who start an alpine walk with only a wrist gps and a topo and no real compass, and then get annoyed about you expressing concern about them when you find out they think they are 6 km from their actual point and have their cardinal directions mixed up. At least they had a plb.

It's west of the tarn, an obvious pile of rocks not far north of the cliffs. To me, this is one overriding reason for a GPS, of course with the true highpoints (thank you, Martin) already logged. There is a spreadsheet available that gives the coordinates to five or six decimals, and it's pretty reliable.

I didn't see a tarn, so I guess I didn't go far enough...

I couldn't see much with the sleet and fog. I kept climbing until there was no way to go but down in every direction. There was a summit cairn but I'll have to check my GPS trace to find out how much I failed by.

It would be hard to miss the tarn unless you keep right on the cliffs. Ground does drop away to the tarn from most sides - I suspect you were on the high point to the east of it.

Co-ordinates for the high point are (from the spreadsheet) 41.973270 E x 146.023146 S; from my GPS 41.97327 E x 146.02313 S

Biggest dislike: struggling up a steep hill, bent over with a heavy pack, looking through sweaty stinging eyes at the next big step, lifting the lead foot above knee height to gain a foothold and then lungeing upwards only to find the pack contacts an overhead branch and slams me back down.

second biggest dislike: having to make the step again, this time bent over as far as flexibility allows and holding that pose until beyond the branch.

No dislikes yet. I'm sure I will over time.

What I will say is that people who have an issue with others talking on a hike, need to have a good hard look at themselves. Sometimes talking about random subjects with others can keep you from going nuts while out hiking.

Nothing wrong with being social and friendly.

I walk to try to keep some slight degree of sanity. I almost invariably do it alone because that works best for me. Your sanity is your problem. It is not my responsibility to risk mine in order to maintain yours.

Nothing wrong with being antisocial and unfriendly.

Oh yeah definitely. Not saying you're obliged to talk to everyone you meet, but I'm not sure being unfriendly is the right way to go about it.

When you start grumbling about the noisy 'other' party at your camp and they turn out to be good friends you haven't seen for two years and they invite you to play dice scrabble around a fire in a hut and then invite you to their home in The Nations Capital....
... Happened to me on the Jagungal circuit last week.

Only a dislike until you recognise your friends - Then the dislike is reconciling your inbuilt antipathy with the fact that you actually (shock!) like meeting people on the track....still working on that one..(ahem)

When you come to a hut, after a long days walk, and find a fireplace and some wood. You start a fire, dreaming about getting all warm and cozy, only to find out that the chimney is blocked. The result is a smoky hut, smoky gear and a smoky hiker.

Directions that say "after 10 minutes turn left." WHOSE 10 minutes? These sorts of directions will almost always call both 100m flat and 500m uphill "five minutes."
