+1. Especially when you specifically go to the camp site where they are banned, chose a nice quiet spot, then bogans arrive and set up next to you and run their generator and floodlights till all hours.

This will surprise many but I find pocket knives to be truly overrated. The blades are just too small. Can cut very little without including the hand. When outdoors I take a lightweight kitchen knife.

Food rationing is another. Good for saving weight, not so good for morale.

People who light fire when fires are not allowed - you know who you are. Yes you, you on the Larrapinta last year. Its free, the facilities are great and the only thing they ask is no fires.

+1. I love a good fire but its pretty simple to respect the terms of usage. I was out during the nsw bushfires last year (up in the hunter) and while far from danger to.see some other knob light a bunch of logs up in a total fireban was insane

When you find a nice camping spot in the middle of no where and someone else comes along and pitches their tent near by!

It's a bit like going into a large empty car park to go to the shops and you come back and some meantrathall has parked right next to you and the rest of the car park is empty - some people can not think for themselves....

funny and true story. When I made my first hammock I went to a nearby reserve to test it out. Found a nice quiet spot, so parked and started. So 2 minutes later this car pulls up right next to. Literally right next to me. Noone else around. I was kind of mad but tried to ignore them. I could sense I was being watched. Anyway after 2 mins or so he just drove off. Now I was kind of pissed off and gave up on the hammock and went home. Told my wife who laughed.
So apparentlt where I was is a known 'cruise' point and the dude was wondering if I wanted to..you get the picture. How naive I was

Funny story - my friend had an old car and the electricals kept failing. One night he was driving home and the car came to a complete stop just outside a similar place in the Adelaide parklands. He called the RAA and had to wait for about 1 hour during which time cars kept on coming up behind him and flashing their lights. At first he did not realise it was that sort of place and got out of his car thinking someone had stopped to help him! He got a hell of a shock when asked to perform some evil act!

After this he sat in the car until the RAA came and fixed it - he sold the car soon afterwards!

Boots freezing solid overnight in the vestibules.

Hard to get on and will cool down your feet again when you finally do.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

Had this problem once and next time I put a hand warmer in each boot before I went to bed. Warm boots in the morning.

I always make sure the laces are loosened and the boots pulled as wide open as possible. In really cold conditions I'll usually put the pack on top of them, which does keep them a bit warmer.
I learnt this the hard way after a pair were frozen in a shape that wouldn't go on until defrosted.

As for cold and uncomfortable, it's worse when the socks get frozen. Another one learnt the hard way: keep those socks in the ten, in a plastic bag, under or in the sleeping bag.

Litter. There's far, far too much of it all over Tasmania. Pretty disheartening when you see a flash of colour in the Julians Lakes, only to discover it's a VB can. That's the only problem with 4WD access to Julians/Pillans as far as I'm concerned.

Unburied poo. Especially where you want to set up camp.

Realising your spare rechargeable batteries for your headtorch aren't actually recharged.

Not being able to get in at least a couple of hours sight-polaroiding during a multi-day Western Lakes trek ;-)

I roll mine up with the valve open. Then close the valve and unroll it again.

Then roll it up again about half way with the valve still closed. You'll see the other half inflate. When it gets full, open the valve and let the air out.

Works for me.

That is our technique not only for our large 4wd self inflating mattress but also our hiking thermarests.

Poorly designed huts, like Windy Ridge on the OLT and Mac Springs in Victoria. Parties that are too big for the area. Parties that have inadequate gear. People that leave rubbish, including a large orange bag of putrifying rubbish near a popular hut, hidden 150 metres from the hut. People that cut wood near a FSOA hut for the pot belly stove. Should be locked up. (People and the stove.) Tracks that disappear at huts and can be hard to locate. Foolish regulations, such as those that I understand apply in Victorian parks.

When you waterproofed your boots a week ago, step into a puddle and your socks instantly get wet … and you've got another 15km to go.

Campsite that looks like your fellow bushwalker simply upended his pack and then spread it all out so it appears like vandals have rooted through it.
(My son's tent looks like this too. Come to think of it so does his bedroom at times)

And frozen muddy socks.
When you've hung them up at the top of your tent overnight, and then forgotten to put them in a plastic bag to thaw them out in your sleeping bag with you before you put them on again.
Warm wet muddy socks are infinitely preferable to frozen muddy socks.
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

Leaving your soaking wet shoes and socks near the campfire to dry out, only to discover that they have started to melt at the toes .

People who stand in the middle of a narrow track and talk at you.

The nostril-clenching, gut-wrenching, eye-watering, throat-closing miasma of anti-perspirant, deodorant, perfume and aftershave that follows 'hygiene' obsessed tourists on popular scenic tracks.

Gleeson wrote:People who light fire when fires are not allowed - you know who you are.

Even more than that, the ones who act all innocent when you do the "can you not read or did you not see all the signs about Fuel Stoves Only, No Fires?" routine:
"Oh, we didn't see any signs" - Oh yeah, there are only four of them on every possible route into this spot, of course you missed them all.
"Oh, we thought it just meant on the beach" - Oh yeah, that's why the first sign is at the beach entry to the campground. (That is, the first one apart from the the one at the start of the track, the one at the entry to the National Park, the one at the main walker registration station, the ones at the previous campgrounds on this loop . . .)
