Hi Wayno,

Thanks for the links, very timely, I just booked some flights to Queenstown today, planning to do the Young-Wilkins plus a shorter walk in the area.

LINZ is the NZ government department responsible for Land Information, including topographic maps. The full set of NZ topo maps is available at no cost (electronically). Consequently, there are a number of websites providing free access to the data (in different forms).

1. Full topo maps for Garmin mapping GPSs : http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1561

2. WAMS - zoomable topo map of NZ, detailing public access land : http://wams.org.nz/wams_desktop/index.aspx

3. LINZ 1:50,000 maps : http://www.linz.govt.nz/topography/topo ... index.aspx

4. General topo map access : http://www.topomap.co.nz/ - as wayno listed above
and also http://www.nztopomaps.com/

You'll like the Young & Wilkin valleys.
If you want some other things to do, try Mt Shrimpton up behind Makarora village, or get the Newmans Coach further up the highway to Fantail Falls south of Haast.
You could take a jaunt up to Brewster Hut and spend a couple of days poking around there.

New Zealand Alpine Club is worth investigating. The club publishes a couple of excellent guide books, and there are membership benefits.

Tararua Guide Book

Postby wayno » Fri 21 Mar, 2014 5:37 pm

The aim of this guide is to aid the tramper (walker, backpacker, hiker) of moderate fitness who is going on a particular trip for the first time. A few trips are simple road-end walks, but the majority are tramping trips that need boots, pack, and the usual tramping gear. The region covered is the Tararua Forest Park and its foothills; bounded roughly by the main roads along the Wairarapa and Horowhenua; the Akatarawa–Waikanae road; the Manawatu Gorge and the Rimutaka Hill

A very useful planning tool is http://www.RouteGuides.co.nz

It's a map-driven resource of routes contributed by trampers - I started a topic here : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=20617

the status of a lot of NZ tracks can change at any time,
pay attention to the DOC track alerts page, even the great walks can become inaccessible and dangerous esp in winter

http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recrea ... go/alerts/

I dont care what anyone has told you or what you've see on the internet, thirty years tramping in NZ tells me the weather can be crap any time of the year, pay attention to forecasts,

I've checked some of the walks on the booking.doc.govt.nz site and you can't book them for the summer season until early May. It seems to depend on the walk though.

Is there a list of dates for when booking is possible for the different walks?
How fast do they get booked?
