Been to Liffey Falls lately? YUK!
All the clear felling and burning that has gone on, on the road in. All they had to do was leave a few metres to hide it from the road. They just don't care. I remember the first time I travelled the road south from Burnie to Queenstown. The road past Waratah turnoff to the Cradle Mtn link road was, I thought, pristine wilderness. Now you often get to see the true destruction of what's going on behind the tree border. :(

Adam, I travel a lot all over Tassie and it is the same everywhere you go.
Anyone who doubts this only has to check out Google Earth which shows logging coupes all over.
I agree 100% with your comments regarding the replacement of old growth with plantations so it can be said "only plantations for the pulp mill" What bu.. sh..t ! If only more people were to question , and to get out and have a look at what is REALLY going on then more would questionand ask why the hell are we letting these people destroy our NON replaceable old growth forests.
Don't believe what they tell you, get out and see for yourself what F.T. is doing so they can make a $55,000,000 loss to follow on from last years effort. Makes my blood boil.
Only the big gunns make a big quid out of all this.
Where does all the machinery come from? Not from Australia thats for sure. How much interest goes to the big banks. How much money goes overseas for dozers, trucks, skidders, cable loggers etc.
How many people have to be killed on our roads by big trucks ..etc.etc.etc.
All for less and less jobs year by year. and i USE timber every day in my work.
But this isn't about Timber IS IT.
it's about tearing down as much OLD GROWTH and replacing it with plantations a.s.a.p. before people wise up and say enough is enough.

I know FF puts his money where his mouth is (good on you mate) and contributes to the Wildos, hands up who else does this from the comfort of their safe jobs.
I state unequivocally that I love our Old Growth Forests, despair at bad forestry practice and believe the Mill should have been at Hampshire but the video footage of the Florentine protest sickened me for two reasons, I abhor violence
and agents provocateur ,in my opinion two wrongs dont make a right and all offenders deserve penalties with in the law.
This is my final post on this topic as I want to concentrate on REAL BW things not freaking politics

The big problem with forestry is that nobody cares about toworrow or next generation. They only seem to care about the next 5-10 or maybe 20 years.
These trees are hundreds of years old,so the harvesters will never see another CROP like them.
Trouble is nobody seems to care much about whats going to be left in 80-100 years time.
The management of large logging companies are looking at the next few years and then "who cares -I'll have my super "

Well said flyfisher, all of it. To start on another controversial (though it shouldn't be) topic , due to the same attitude as above the question may well be academic in 50 years or so as global warming accelerates and the planet becomes unfit for human life, a distinct possibility.

I drove past the protesters a few weeks back and must admit that my first thoughts were of paying taxes for people to just
'hang out'..

I thought further over the next few hours and ended up somewhere similar to flyfisher - a bigger picture.
Perhaps we should all go out there?
Why cant We decide what stays?
It seems beyond either party to draw THE line.
