Some specy views from the Queenstown area

Postby flatfoot » Sun 22 Jan, 2012 8:58 am

I'm currently in Queenstown ahead of my Milford Track walk. I made time available for some walks around Queenstown. Here's a few videos:

The first shows the setting sun from Queenstown Hill on Friday 20 January. Note that I flew in mid-afternoon and couldn't resist the opportunity on such a fabulous evening, to walk up Queenstown Hill.

The other videos are from a specy walk up Ben Lomond on Saturday 21 January. Well worth the long climb!

Looks great. I've been up Queenstown hill, but not Lomond.

What camera have you got that you can attach it to your hat?

Cheers.

The camera I have is a 1080P Drift Innovation HD170. I picked mine up a couple of weeks ago via eBay. There are good deals on this model, since a new smaller model has just been released. It's reasonably splash proof and rain proof.

It has a little screen for tweaking settings and a Bluetooth remote wrist strap (useful if camera is on your head). It is supplied with a number of attachment accessories. It also has a standard tripod-style thread. It has a lens that twists through 300 degrees, which helps to cater for a number of orientations. I'm pretty happy with it :)

So is it a bit of a pain to carry like that?

I wondered about a gopro in a chest mount, but haven't tried it.

I was impressed to see your hands flash by a couple of times. unexpected. Poles?

I did a test run with a backpack mount and the results are jerky. At least with a head mount you get some good footage because the camera follows the motion of your head, which is generally where you are looking.

I keep it in a smallish camera case hooked onto the front of my shoulder strap. That way I have quick access for hand-held shots. I carry the head strap in whatever pocket is convenient.

I was using a single pole on that part of the descent. I prefer to have one hand free whenever there is the possibility of scrambling. There was one or two rocky switchbacks that required extra care.

Ben Lomond is a good morning or evening walk (short and uphill, no nav)
Stinker during the day as it's all exposed once you get higher.

You'll get even nicer views if you go up the Remarkables
