Dusky weather

Postby Raymondo » Fri 08 Feb, 2019 5:08 pm

Hi All
Heading over to NZ for the whole of March to walk (Tramp). Want to do the Florence Stream-4 lakes-Dusky route for the first 10 days or so. Just wondering whether any locals could comment on the recent weather/rain amounts down in Fiordland this year? Obviously changes all the time but guess some years may be dryer than others?
Then will move onto the Matukituki-cascade saddle-Rees saddle-Snowy Creek-Lake Lochnager-Shotover Saddle circuit.
Cheers
Ray

The met service do a 'last 30 days' thing including rainfall. That would be a good place to start.. scroll about halfway down to view the past info.

weather has been extremely variable.
cascade saddle and shotover saddle are strictly a dry weather only routes. its literally lethal in the wet or ice.
heavy rain on the dusky will strand you until the flooding subsides.
getting from snowy creek to lochnagar often needs and ice axe and crampons... the route is difficult and potentially fatal and shouldnt be attempted in bad visibility.
its far wetter in the mountains than it is at milford sound..
from the land of the long white clouds...

... and Locknagar and surrounds is on private land - have you sought permission to tramp there?

If not, you'll find contact information with a search on tramper.nz
