The two climbers whose bodies were recovered from the upper slopes of Mt Silberhorn were Stuart Jason HOLLAWAY aged 42 years of Melbourne, Australia and his partner Dale Amanda THISTLETHWAITE aged 35 also from Melbourne.

Mr HOLLAWAY was a highly respected and experience mountain guide and Ms THISTLETHWAITE was also a very experienced climber.

The pair had been travelling and climbing in New Zealand since early December 2015.

Enquiries indicated that the pair fell from near the top of the mountain early on the 29th says Inspector Dave Gaskin , Area Commander- Mid South Canterbury Police.

The deaths will be referred to the Coroner
