Australian woman falls 300 metres to her death from New Zealand

An Australian climber has died after falling 300 metres down the Footstool mountain on New Zealand's South Island.

Local police inspector Dave Gaskin said a 29-year-old woman fell near the peak onto a glacier in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.

He said she was airlifted to a search and rescue base where she received medical treatment, but died a short time later.

Her name has not yet been released as police are still notifying her next of kin.
