Gaia GPS and LINZ topos

Postby hobbitle » Sat 05 Dec, 2015 11:21 am

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else out there uses Gaia GPS with LINZ topos for NZ.
I am very impressed with the app however I just have one concern. The LINZ topos appear to have markers overlaying the maps that mark huts, streams, and other notable points on the map. The problem is that those markers are not in the same location as the location on the map. For example, the topo will have "McCoy Hut" marked on it but the Gaia marker that says "McCoy hut" will be 500m north-west, or something similar.
I don't know which is the correct location - is the whole map out of alignment somehow? Or are the markers incorrect?
I've attached some screenshots so you can see what I mean.

Regards!

P.S. I have tracked a sample route in Australia, and it locates me correctly and the track is aligned with the route I take, but obviously can't test the NZ topos until I get there...

Well, you can rule out any datum or grid setting error as points are displaced by differing amounts and directions on the same map.

The correct hut locations are the ones that are part of the LINZ map (ie the dots).

The bits that are not a part of the LINZ maps are the blue and brown square markers (hut, river, col, etc) and the associated text. Judging from your screen shots, I would doubt their accuracy.

If the gps will take a gpx file, I suggest downloading a couple and see if they align correctly. That should tell you if it's the base maps or your points.

Great idea thanks so much tastrax, the track on the link you provided lined up with the topo map as it should have, so the map is fine, it's the "Gaia" markers that are out of whack. That's good news. Thanks again!

I am glad that it's worked out for you. Now let Gaia know that there points are incorrect!
