bad planning on your part may constitute and emergency on a the part of a lot of people.
extremely lucky they had cell phone contact at all. do not rely on cell phones in the NZ mountains, second incident in as many weeks, both relied on cell phones to call for help. Do not expect a cell phone will save you in NZ, 99.99 percent of the time it will not have connection.

Wayno,
It's pretty simple that people must do there homework, plan carefully and gain as much knowledge of where they are going before they go but do the trail heads in NZ have signage telling people that mobile phones are very unreliable in areas where they are not reliable?
Personally, out in the bush, I don't rely on my phone for anything. In your mountains you would have to be nuts to rely on a mobile phone for safety.
