NZ fire bans

Fri 06 Feb, 2015 4:16 pm

if you're coming over to NZ and planning to have a camp fire on your trip.. check on the fire bans in force. most of eastern and central south island have fire bans in place...
for those who dont know , it is usually legal to light campfires in NZ parks. so fire bans are not the norm most of the year.
its been an extremely dry summer here. looks a bit like aus in some areas....
fires are springing up around the place... nothing yet that has impacted walking tracks although some road access has been impacted on occasion...
its not on a scale of aus fires, but a lot of the vegetation is still very flammable at the moment... more so than normal.

It would helpful if there was some way, short of incineration, to stop morons, in my experience backpackers from cooler climates; flicking butts into tussock around huts in summer. Fair to think they do it along tracks as well.

Yes, be warned that the Molesworth and Rainbow roads are currently closed due to the high fire danger.

i'm not sure that applies to walkers, technically theres nothing to stop you accessing the road past the gates from a walking track. theres nothing stopping you walking past the gate either. no walking tracks are closed in the area
