Just back from NZ. Did the Abel Tasman Track then linked into the Inland Track from Nelson.
Watch the track times from NZ DOC's they are very fast.
We are experienced multiday walkers used to carrying packs but found the suggested point to point times way too fast; after seeing the rangers power thru the tracks with repair materials for huts I think they did the times - they are very fit ppl.
I have a huge planning spreadsheet of for the trip which covered just about everything from Leaving OZ to returning, transport, supplies pickup etc; if you want it let me know.
The Abel Tasman track is a busy track until you get to about Totaranui then the day trippers disappear. Brilliant scenery. We went from Marahau to Wariwharangi Hut then linked to the Inland Track.
Here you run into thickish high rainfall bush but the tracks are marked but the tree roots (black snakes) are slippery if they get damp; you need to watch your feet for Obstacles. This section is best described as HARD.
We did it in 5.5 days - way too fast; shud have had a rest day at Wariwharangi By Hut
April WX can still be settled in NZ, yes it is getting cold around Nelson by Oz standards; depends on what temps you are used too
Not quite answering the question but , help this may help
