Concern grows for missing tramper
http://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/2864 ... ng-tramper

weather is heightening concerns for a missing tourist in Nelson Lakes National Park.
Nelson Bays Police are appealing for sightings of 41-year-old British tourist Andrew Ian Wyatt, overdue on the Te Araroa Trail between Nelson Lakes and Boyle River

the area between waiau pass at the southern end of nelson lakes national park and the st james walkway on the Te Araroa Trail, is a common place for people to die
an ultra light walker went missing a few years ago and was never found, drownings arent uncommon on the Waiau river... its not an easy river to cross at the best of times.... after rain it becomes suicidal to cross. divert from the trail and you're in an area where few people venture in an area full of bluffs and difficult river crossings...

It was a case of "deja vu" for police, as the same tramper failed to reach a planned meeting when walking the same trail last year, police search and rescue coordinator senior constable Gerry Tonkin said

the route through this area on Te Araroa, doesnt sit with most of the track, most of Te Araroa doesnt go through dangerous areas, the biggest risk is usually getting lost on an overgrown bush track or run over on a road bash
but the route over the waiau pass, kills someone every few years, it can be quite a treacherous area to negotiate especially in bad weather or bad visibility.... people who are very experienced with long distance trails often get a rude shock when they encounter Te Araroas harder areas.... this area is a full on alpine environment... if you're not experienced moving on steep rocky scree covered slopes, its not a place to cut your teeth on....
