farm access may be legally easier for walkers in brittain, it was a major problem for te araroa, the trail has to zig zag in places doing wide arcs around farmland they wanted access to but the owners wouldnt grant it, especially in the north island. possibly the higher density of farming makes farmers more reluctant since people are likely to end up closer to livestock here?
so unfortunately the path te araroa take is less than ideal adding extra miles on road and farmland. farmland doesnt hold much appeal to me, grew up in sight of it. in my mind it just doesnt motivate me to walk it, its too much of an every day landscape for me. and since most country roads in nz go through .. farms.... I associate it as a landscape that i drive through to get to the landscape i want to walk in.... I'm assuming a lot of people wanting to walk te araroa dont see that landscape as much, theres no wow factor in farmland for me like there is for others.
