Walking this morning out of the gloaming, frost to ground, sky heavy with blue, singing.

Turn them all up, really loud, there is no nudity, no swearing -I don't think anyone could be offended-just some of what comes to me, what I can hear when I walk. They come unbidden and easy.
What are you hearing when you walk? -
This is Utralight- so none of the following permitted- "I love to listen to Scissor Sisters on my phone....they are great!"
Nope, that's not what I am seeking. Let's presume you left all that/those devices at home, no reference to Spotify, Eye tunes, Walkman, phone, hard drive, device.
Who sings to you when you are stepping? Ella Fitzgerald, Anohni,Jeff St. John, Tony Bennett, Rickie Lee Jones, Plastic Bertrand, Kraftwerk, Adalita, Sepultura, Gene Krupa, Painters and Dockers, the Drones, Gurrumul Yunnipingu ?
Who speaks to you as you tramp? A friend cannot stop Joseph Conrad and Marlowe from his Heart of Darkness. Whose words are you reciting, William Barak, Khalil Gibran, Emily Bronte, the Mahabharata, Joseph Heller, The Old Testament?
Can you give up a quote or a song (link a clip/lyrics even better), that just happens to you over and over as you put one foot in front of the other.

Truly Ultralight-they weigh nothing! They are in your memory.

You're talking about ear worms. My theme song for many Himalayan treks. This song is a perpetual ear worm for me.

Ah, the Hunnas.
Just looked up "ear worm", that is a new one to me.
No, that's not what I was referring to.
"An earworm, sometimes known as a brainworm, sticky music, stuck song syndrome, or Involuntary Musical Imagery (INMI) is a catchy piece of music that continually repeats through a person's mind after it is no longer playing". Wikipedia.
Hence my saying what words or music or both "speak to you".
It will be song/prose that you welcome over and over, as some other new words or music become meaningful to you they become added to "your list" and you are glad and maybe even comforted by them. I hear Madonna's "Into the Groove" over and over but it is attached to a memory of hitchhiking through San Francisco in 1985. It was playing on the VW Beetle that picked me up. But it doesn't speak to me like Bronte, Heller, Nadia Reid or Johnny Cash.
Thanks for reminding me of the hunnas tho'!

We called them the 'Tors ... although that song has been sullied lately

Gotta love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxf47w4WCQI from Paul Kelly as a walking song.

Anything from Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Chisel or the Oils. ATM the Cranberries Zombie is an earworm.

G'day Cajun,
these "earworms" and "walking songs" are excluded. If you have to consciously call the words or music to mind or be prompted-no go. "They come unbidden and easy".
Do you have one?

Fair enough - Zombie is a classic with a great hook - a truly great pop song that atm is an earworm for me. But not one I can recall singing when out bushwalking ( although after day one on the OLT, it would have been very appropriate :D )

But when I said walking songs, I meant songs that come to me, often starting as I hum a guitar solo or chord progression absently, as I walk.

They aren't forced, and if not started from an involuntary memory of a guitar lick, it can be from exactly what you described in the original post. A view, a bird or an animal or just the pure joy at being in the outdoors.

Perhaps it is just me, but I am never very far from music wherever I am.

And that song/s that meanders unbidden, "that starts as I hum a guitar solo" is ..............? That's the song I am wondering about.
US Forces..? Blue Sky Mine?
The Star Hotel? Khe Sanh? Flame trees ?
I can't tell you why?

My daughter and I are both enjoy a wide range of music. We play a game that we call Earworm Inception. The goal is to sing or hum a snippet of a song so it gets stuck in the other persons head. It's both fun and surprisingly easy to do.

Cheers,
Michael.

Chisel - probably Bow River, but Khe Sanh and Chisel's version of Knockin on Heavens Door
Oils - I Don't Wanna be the One, Forgotten Years, Blue Sky Mine
Floyd - Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here,
Zeppelin - Kashmir, Black Dog and of course ...
Dire Straits - Telegraph Road, Sultans
Mussorgsky - Promenade, The Hut on Fowls Legs and the Great Gate of Kiev - all from "Pictures at an Exhibition"
James Taylor - Fire and Rain
Carole KIng - anything off Tapestry
Clapton - Wonderful Tonight

Pretty eclectic, but if I had to pick 2 that come unbidden - Comfortably Numb and Telegraph Road. But all of those and many more will fill my mind unbidden when walking.

No quotes though.

Come on, this has nothing to do with UL backpacking. It's just an excuse to post a link to your favorite tunes.

Comfortably Numb.
That song seems to really strike a chord with Floyd fans.

Being one of the worlds worst singers, I must admit bushwalking away from the hords does offer me the luxury of enjoying relaxing the vocal cords LOL.

Image all the people.. John Lenon
Well I've been walking down the road trying to losen my load.. Jackson Brown
So I wish, So I wish you were here.. Pink Floyd
Destroyed a few Paul Kelly and Richard Clapton songs as well.
And being an old surfdog, can't go past screaching out some "Morning of the Earth" like Simple Ben.

And as mentioned any other worm that gets into my mind. A lot of la lala la and dar dar dar in between.

But don't tell any one.

Could be anything from John Dowland to Gotye. Mostly folk, jazz, blues/rock. Creedence has been getting a lot of airtime lately.

Well I'll be!
-I was dah dah dahing, no real shape to it yesterday, walking up a little hill and before I realised it, it morphed into Bad Moon Rising.
That was a first. Ah Creedence.

Most of their music has a great rhythm for bushwalking.

Of course, sometimes it's weather related. When the low grey skies and wetness are overwhelming it's Who'll Stop The Rain?.

Walking along the beach in the steady but light rain, doing some training on the sand and was thinking this looks more like spring rain and the next thing I knew I started singing this-

A long time pleasure of mine has been to commence running or walking in the dark and to move eastwards, to greet the dawn head on. Works for me. Always.

I find the film clip of Coldplay's "Yellow" seems to emulate this for me as it transitions from initial black & white and gloom and into colour and light, all in one long shot.

Try it. https://youtu.be/yKNxeF4KMsY

But do you hear the song? Does it come to you as you walk into the rising sun, unconsciously? Or any other song/clip/poetry.
Or does the clip play in your mind unconsciously? What comes unbidden?
That's what I'm interested in.

Good question, the Shadow. ( i remember the radio show!)

When its pre dawn and dark, and I'm on the move under an open sky, and there's no one else about, i get the call: " Look at the stars....See how they shine for you.... " it comes automatically and unannounced.... if the sky is clear. Dont think it would come if it was cloudy, due to cognitive dissonance.

Searched and found this clip. Remember Sunbury anyone?
I suppose if you remember it you weren't there?
For Dinosaur JR fans -don't you reckon Thorpey belts the strings like J. Mascis?

When Im hurting heading up hill with many vertical metres, The only way is up - Yazz and the plastic population. Terrible song, but I somehow feel better and recharge the batteries, when belting out this horrible tune. Must be out of breath and sweating, preferably a climb that requires using ones hands as well.

Walking out of the dark this morning-this song comes to me and just keeps coming.
A brilliant and uplifting version for those keen enough to listen, I especially like Warren Ellis' piano and the choir in this version.
Grab on and run like you stole something.
