Packing for a 3 day bush-walk. My new Gossamer Gear Kumo pack turned up in the post yesterday.
Everything fits with some room to spare.

They say a photo tells a thousand words, so I'll let the photos tell the rest, and I have visitors over now. :D

Nice to see you can still make room for a Hilleberg item even with a UL pack ;-)

Wow! Nice job. 4kg base weight. How much food/fuel do you take a day?

I find I'm happy with 400g + small bottle of oil.

Between 500 to 600 grams of food per day. Mostly homemade dehydrated meals.

Fuel: I use 20 to 30 ml's per day. Fuel consumption will raise slightly from now as I will be starting to incorporate Dry-Baking. Past few days dry-baking muffins and cakes to find out the fuel consumption. The family are enjoying the results of my Dry-Baking tests.

Brilliant! Well done on your new set-up. The photo tells the story very eloquently. The pack looks tiny and light... jealous

I dont know about that wayno, I would easily use this setup in the blue mountains during winter, Its not much different to the pack load I taken with me a month back on the six foot track. Temps was between 0 to 7c with strong westerly blowing up at blackrange camp ( i think its called)

Blue Mountains I taken a Gossamer Gear Maripossa pack and a heavier Macpac Sundowner XP down jacket, the rest is pretty much the same. Except for the rain jacket. Up here in QLD the poncho works great.

The Kumo pack volume is 28litres, include the pockets i believe its 36 litres.

-6.66... but usually rounded to -7C by manufacturers.

Also US cottage manufacturers tend to estimate warmth based upon loft in half-inch increments, with the result that their ratings tend to slightly conservative compared to EN ratings. -7C or 20F corresponds to 2.5 inches of single-sided loft, but most bags with that sort of loft are usually EN rated to -9C. Similarly bags with 3in of loft are quoted as 15F, or about -10C with an EN rating of -11 or -12C.

Nice set up Phil. What does your hammock/quilts/tarp weigh by themselves?

On that note, do you find sleeping in a hammock lighter than an ultralight tent/tarp?
I would image it would be more comfortable with the hammock though.

With a bug net hammock, generally a little heavier, Only talking a few hundred grams though. That's taking in the tarp, UQ etc.
But thats a big YES, heaps more comfortable.

I do not know how you can sleep with a curved spine like that (hips lower than feet and chest).

Hi Robert H
I have the same hammock rig - and I must say -- very comfortable best sleeps in the bush ever.
In the warbonnets you actually sleep on an angle (about 30deg) from the main line. There is a special foot pocket. So my back is almost completely flat. I usually sleep on my side (as I do in a bed) but can sleep back or side fine).
Your head is slightly elevated, similar to using a pillow.
I was not convinced until I tried one - now I get a bit frustrated when I need to sleep in one of those ground based tents :)

Matt :)

Haha I assumed there must be more too it - sleeping in a normal (everyday?) hammock is never as successful as I had hoped it would be.
Cheers for the post.

Robert if you ever want to try out a hammock for camping let me know I am sure we could arrange something. I am about to get another one so will have a spare :D .

I have a homemade ripstop nylon hammock for the beach. I made it using a conglomeration of hiking tutorials.
It's surprisingly comfortable.

Sleep like this and your spine will be fine and you will be (more or less) flat:

My Hammock is a lot more comfortable I can camp in places where you can not take a tent.
Before someone turns around and comments, ( I can take a tent where you can't take a hammock) I also own a tent for those situations.

My tent is a lighter setup, but I hate sleeping on the ground.

Very nice setup Phil.
I was a little put off when I joined this forum, reason being the first thread I found that was about UL gear was the one that you made the other week, where people personally attacked you. As someone who is starting out & getting more serious with my hiking, I was hoping to get some knowledge from people that have been hiking UL for a while & that could recommend some good gear choices and ways to save possible weight.
The good thing is now there is this dedicated section for ultra lighters, so I know I will be around this section of the forum more than anywhere else.

Good luck with your travels, & those people that think UL is dangerous, really need to have a look at what's out there these days.

I look forward to seeing what new things appear in the section of the forum.

Cheers,

Glenn.

Thanks Glenn.
Because the UL section was added to the forum here is what's kept me here. Otherwise I highly doubt I would have been back and I also received emails of support from both members and moderators which has encouraged me. I bumped into bushwalkers on my travels that have less weight than I do. I also received emails of support from a few UL walkers that frequent this forum but don't post for the very reason I had found out on that topic I posted.

I could go lighter but I want some durability in my gear. I've looked hard and long for gear that's both durable and lightweight. I'm very happy with my current list. It works great for me. I'm comfortable and get to enjoy baked meals such as cakes and muffins. For those times I want to go of track, I take my Jansport Prototype backpack, It's a one off pack, can't buy it anywhere, the pack is sturdy weighing 1.5kg made of very durable materials. Takes my pack weight a kilo heavier but I don't need to worry about any damage with this pack in those off track conditions.

My new pack is great. Love this pack, It's just the right size and weight for me. I have since added two Zpacks Cuben Fiber Shoulder Pouches to the front of the shoulder straps for carrying extra water, GPS etc. The smaller volume pack is not for everyone, You need gear that's not bulky and refrain from taken to much luxury items. I'm out there to enjoy the bush and surroundings not to play with gadgets etc, I can do that at home.

I have not left out all luxury's, a Comfortable hammock and baking fresh cakes and or muffins at camp. Who ever thought this would be possible in so little weight.
