Tyvek

Postby Ruzza » Thu 05 Apr, 2012 3:39 pm

A friend of mine here in South Australia bought some Tyvek (for under her tent) from a person in Tasmania through this forum and she says she goes by the name of "Lady Gadiver" (sic) I would like to purchase some for myself. Does anyone know how I can contact her?

The Tyvek fabric you are looking for is Type 1443R which weighs 42.38g/sq.m. It might be a good idea for clubs to consider to buying a roll (60inches wide X 10m or 100m) for sale to interested members. Not sure of costs and supply source but backpackinglight site has a thread on this topic that might be a useful lead.

Sewing is OK with Tyvek but you will need to seam seal it .

Seam sealing is fine, me thinks I will make a bivi bag instead of buying one straight away.
Now im a bit of a realist, how breathable is tyvek? Don't worry I don't have any fairytale hopes but I just don't want a plastic bag for sleeping =)

I definitely prefer sewing the softer 1443r vs the homewrap stuff. I also think for a bivy the 1443r would be the way to go. Ive been toying with a bivy design for a while now. I've got WPB fabric and 1443r and I can't make up my mind which way to go. It will probably combine the lot :-)

Matt I've got one of terrarosagears tyvek sleeping bag covers (in 1443r) and it rocks. I've never had any condensation issues with it and I always pack it as its so light. Mind you this is hoodless and doesn't enclose so it vents well out the top. Evan (hitchiking) may be able to shed some more light on the subject

What glue would you use nuts (mind you I can so see myself sticking my fingers to the tyvek). Is there a tape that works like what you use for cuben?

I have seen tyvek tape used online but im yet to be convinced of its durability. Plus a zipper would be a nice touch =)

I used Spray contact adhesive Mic. Masked and using a card to catch the overspray is quick and neat, sealed and strong.... Overlapped seams are stronger than anything fancy. A heavy spray works on w/resistant YKK zips too

I'd suggest testing on a small sample (Mat) as 'neat' is relative and following instructions (on the can) is the key... It can all be sewn afterwards anyhow (if you find a way to stuff it up :) )

Can you get hold of a soldering iron (even better with a hot knife tip)? Cuts (and seals) synthetic material like butter!!

Tyvek 1443r is a great material to work with. I find its very user friendly which is great when your focused on tyring to create something out of it.
This might be of useful. Its terrible quality video I did a while back to have a look at how the air passed through the tyvek and if any water got through.
It worked very well and I was impressed. It also drys out very fast.

I have sprayed and washed in DWR treatments from various companies with good sucess. Its an extra bit of water repellency for the material( non-woven polyethelen). How this affects the breathabilty I would not be able to say other then my personal pieces of kit are still working great.

The Dupont website ( http://www2.dupont.com/Tyvek_Graphics/e ... 1443R.html ) has the the tech specs on the materials and is well worth a read if your interested in it.

Thanks Nuts and Hitchhiking.
It looks like I will be going the tyvek approach!
@ Nuts- I think I can get my hands on a soldering iron, me and my friends are computer geeks so it shouldn't be too hard =)
@ Nuts- Where would I get the adhesive?
@ Hitchhiking- The video is great, I'm quite convinced tyvek is the go now.

@Matt,
I used a hot knife tip but someone posted a Y Tube of doing it with a normal soldering tip here somewhere..
iirc I just used Selleys but the key is to do some of your own testing, its easy.. and make sure your confident with whatever method or join First.. I made some tyvek bags but have never (for eg) washed them.. another thought being that I also found (with Cuben) that you can sandwich mesh between two fabric layers..
Evans link reminded me of something I read about PVA (yep, everyday waterbased wood glue) working with Tyvek (?)
