Tape for soda can stoves?

Postby kymboy » Mon 02 Jan, 2012 5:05 pm

Well it is the silly season, so with time on my hands and plenty of empty beer and soft drink cans around, I've made a couple of soda can stoves. The top halves fit reasonably snugly into the bottom, but I'm thinking that either some glue or heat resistant tape might be handy to secure the two halves together. Would foil heat shield tape work? Or a bit of 2 part epoxy? Any suggestions welcome. Where's Hikin' Jim when you need him? :D

Options are either to use high temperatue Locktite glue, or there is some aluminium tape that lives in Bunnings (and other hardware shops) somewhere near the aluminium flashing. It's light aluminium with an adhesive backing.

I've just done the same. Amazed to work out that for a forthcoming 10 day trip to NZ, aiming only to boil 500mls of water 10 times for morning coffee, it is lighter to take a soda can stove and 300mls of metho, than to take a Kovea gas stove with cylinder.

Ah, Bunnings, my second home. Thanks for the tip.

If you got no love at Bunnings, Super Cheap Auto have a range of high temp (1300DegC) metal epoxies and the like. Ample for your application. Planning on giving the can stoves a run sometime in the future :)

Try JB Weld - a two part metal weld glue that is heat resistant and has worked well for all my MYO stoves.
