Shock absorbers for guy lines Big tent

Postby Moondog55 » Mon 11 Jan, 2016 3:05 pm

Ordered some shock cord hooks from New Zealand and they arrived today
Just a short question on safe stretch limits of cheap shockcord [ Good quality but not yachting stuff] is allowing 3 times a good limit
If I cut the shockcord 200mm long and cut the limit tape at 600 for instance

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131402077610 ... EBIDX%3AIT

8mm shockcord and 10mm polyester binding tape with both fit and nice and tightly too
Or should I allow more shock absorbtion and go 300mm but with less stretch so still 600mm safety tape?
Once assembled these are apparently very hard to get apart so it needs to be reasonably correct first time
This is for the big Geodome tent for the winter camp

Also I have some 6mm shockcord here with much less stretch and i just made a trial using 200mm of elastic and 350 of tape and it seems to work work
Thoughts anybody?

The shock cord and bungees that I have floating around on canopies and suchlike wouldn't go any near 3x.

Better stuff might ?

Good idea assuming you can get the degree of resistance that you want.

Only takes about 5kg to full stretch but at 200mm
That might be enough but 300 will probably be better

What's wrong with just loops of shock cord on the ends of the guy lines?
I suspect that it will be very hard to get the shock cord load/extension balance right.
If you go ahead with the assembly pictured then it might be worth doing a couple of destructive load tests.

Speed
It's simply faster and easier to do it this way and it's also a fail safe
