Carbon fibre tent poles Thought experiment #2

Postby Moondog55 » Sun 28 Jun, 2015 1:06 pm

A bit of a follow on from my experiments with making the FG wands stronger.
I have all these cheap and LW 25mm aluminium tent pole sections.
Rather than make a mandrel and use it in rotation I thought I could use it as a permanent centre section. One of the problems with using CF over aluminium is the reaction between the CF and epoxy with the aluminium which in my really large pole I countered by wrapping the aluminium in woven FG tape first
That BOPP fibreglass reinforced packing tape I used is very strong and cheap
I thought about using that over the tubing first and then laying up the CF over that
If I go ahead how many layers of CF? Would a single layer of linear sleeve plus a Bi-Axial sleeve be strong enough for normal use to replace 25*3mm steel tube?

Check out carbon fibre tubes on Ebay. They're really cheap, although kind of difficult to cut to length due to the potentially toxic particles.

Nothing I have seen on the evil site has seemed cheap to me in sizes to suit a big tipi

One of them may be but it seems like only a single layer lay-up which may be prone to crushing

Big tipis place a lot of force on the pole and the one I made was 55 * 5mm with a 2 layer lay-up although 1of those was FG and I left the aluminium former in place too
