DIY hand saw

Postby Franco » Wed 11 Jul, 2012 10:57 am

Well I made my compact hand saw.
The w/e before last we were up at MtHotham and spent two days in a hut whilst the other guys were snowboarding.
I was playing with the TT Notch and testing out a new stove (on snow) as well as a new quilt and some other clothing combo.
(I keep changing my mind about what works best)
So I ended up having to saw some wood with a ribbon type saw, a "man's" version of the type commonly sold in disposal stores.
This was made with a real chain from a chain saw , still it was hard work..
So when I came home I started to think about making one and this is it :

The Little Ripper.
Very easy and cheap to do and it works.
Just under 100g (between 95 and 100 if it is important...) 23cm long and about 2.5 cm thick when stored.
Here is a video of it :

BTW, the blade was just an arbitrary decision from someone that has no clue.. (me)
The 10mm wide 3 mm thick aluminium strip is from Bunnings ($2.50)
So is the blade, they come in several sizes from about $5.(mine was $20)

Franco, well done.

I took a pruning saw on a few trips, but decided that:

- in NZ, it was easier just to hit the beach logs against a stick, and they broke cleanly (you wouldn't even try with eucalyptus)
-in Oz, it was easier just to burn a branch in the middle, and then you have 2 logs

Whilst nice to saw things to length, I just didn't find it worth the weight of the saw.

Hi Andrew
As always it depends..
in this case it depends on your fire place.
I used it inside a few huts in this month, one had a fireplace but the other three had a potbelly type stove so a saw was needed.
My prime reason for making it was for the guys that have a stove inside their tent, this kind of set up :
