Overland Track App -- Looking for beta testers

Postby wildwalks » Wed 23 Oct, 2019 9:43 pm

Howdy.

I am nearly finished building a new fan-dangled app to help people plan and walk the Overland Track.
Info on gear, menus, preparing etc. Also mapping stuff so you can track your progress on the walk (but not spend your time looking at a screen).
Think guidebook with maps etc.

In the next few weeks, I hope to start beta testing and I am looking for some guinea pigs who are willing to have a play with the app. If you have done the OLT or planning on walking it soon I am especially keen to for your help.

If you are interested can you pop your details onto the form so I can start planning the testing?

Thanks

Matt :)

Hi Matt,

I just filled in the form. There are two groups from work going. 1 X 8 novice bush walkers and 1 X 7 mixed ability group. First group would probably love any help with planning and they leave on first week December. I'm quite happy with my planning but some of the others in the group may need a hand. I tend to just shove a map and compass in the top of my backpack and use it if needed.

Some of the first group will probably be carrying close to 20kg when packed, I'm hoping for sub 10kg but more likely 12kg.

I'd be happy to help with Beta-testing but I won't be doing the walk for months yet, I'm waiting for the cooler weather to come back, so May/June 2020 for me and that is probably far too late to be of any help.

Thanks Guys

Great Moondog -- I think your thought on the planning part of the app would be helpful. It is really written non-bushwalkers -- but I have tried to still make it helpful for bushwalker (and trying not to be condescending). So your feedback I think would still be helpful.

SmellyPaddler -- sounds really interesting. I would be interested to see how individuals in a group use the app both before and during the app. Would you be willing to share the link with them? I need email address to sign people up for the iOS version of the app.

thanks guys :)

Thanks Slparker
Glad to hear you like the idea. Yes, I am writing the app and content with a few newbies I know who are about to walk the track. But also writing it to be helpful for me next time I walk it. But I think it will be of most value to people who have not walked much. Enjoy the Arm river :)

OK Matt my FB comments are due to the fact that the full app didn't download I tried again and I can now see all the information
Very detailed A bit of information overload for a beginner perhaps but I can't find the basic warnings about weather or at least I've not found them yet
I would have presumed that the weather/hypothermia warnings would be at the top in bold and to be opened first before accessing the rest of the app.
