While bushwalking, record soundscape, get paid

Postby SoundProject2019 » Fri 27 Sep, 2019 2:44 pm

Hello to all of you Bushwalkers! I am reliably advised that you are a friendly lot ... I am an occasionally-timid
American trekker working on a San Francisco-based project that needs some help from a few of you.

Trekking out into the bush? Visiting a nature preserve or national park? Have an iPhone to
record an audio "voice memo"? Yes? Partner with us to get paid for your time outdoors by
creating a recording for our project!

Our project assesses the impact of nature sounds on healthy biological function. We need
good quality, original, audio recordings to cover a 24 hour day cycle of nature sounds from
two Australian environments – bush and desert.

Likely locations include national parks and other rural locations with no human created
sounds. Location should be within areas of native bearded dragon habitat.
Coastal areas and Wetlands are not appropriate for this project.

Here are the requirements:
- Proposed recording timing and location agreed with us in advance (to avoid duplication);
- Recording must be accompanied with compass location stamp (instructions below);
- Recording must begin with a verbal statement with your first name, location and start time;
- Recording must end with a verbal statement with your first name, location and end time;
- Recording must be a minimum of 2 or 4 hours in length (no loops, no compilations, no edits);
- Recording time slots are midnight-4 am, 4-8 am, 8 am-noon, noon-4 pm, 4-8 pm, 8 pm-midnight;
- Two hour recording times can fill half of any of these time slots;
- Recording must not contain human sounds (machines, vehicles, planes, foot steps etc);
- Payment based on full 2 or 4 hour recording content (not partial hours);
- Payment made in AUD via Paypal following receipt and verification of uploaded files; and
- Maximum payment to any one individual is A$900.

How Do I Get Started
Select a location, date and time for your proposed recording. Submit a proposal by email to soundproject2019@gmail.com including
- Your name and email address (Use the email address associated with a Paypal account); and
- Proposed recording location, date (can be a range of days) and time slot(s).

Example
My name is Kim Christopherson-Jones , email kim.Christophersonjones@yahoo.com.au Here is my nature sound project proposal.
I will be in Gibson Desert Nature Preserve on 28-30 September.
I would like to record 4 hour slots of 4-8 pm and 8 pm-midnight for a desert environment.
Please confirm if this is a match.

After receiving a confirmation, scout a great location and make your recording!

Here are the qualities of an ideal recording location:
- Ensure you are out of range of any human sounds: vehicles, airplanes, machines, voices.
- Strong options include canyons or ravines with birdsong, insects and other wildlife.
- In desert areas, water holes can be prime locations for birds, insects and other wildlife.
- Avoid rivers and ocean; loud splashing sound overpowers all else. Minor water sound is okay.
- Avoid wind blowing on the phone's microphone - it creates an obviously non-natural sound.
- Avoid rainstorms - bad for phones, and limited sound quality.
- Close your eyes and listen to what is around you. Can you count at least five natural sounds?
- Are sounds nearby and farther away, creating depth and contrast or variety?
- Are there any human sounds? Footsteps? Talking? Vehicles or aeroplane? (Try elsewhere!)
- The recording will be in one location for the duration, not while hiking or moving.
- For a night time recording, pitch a tent, and set up to record while you sleep.

How to set up your iPhone for the recording
- In Settings >> Voice Memos >>Audio Quality >> SET THIS to LOSSLESS
- In Settings >> Voice Memos >>Location-based naming >> SET THIS to ON

How to create the recording:
- Ensure the location and time for the recording matches the agreed plan with us.
- Ensure phone is set up for Lossless audio quality and location naming as noted above.
- Ensure your location has appropriate sounds for recording as noted above.
- Ensure that your phone is fully charged.
- Ensure that you have space on your phone to hold the recording.
(100 minutes of recording file takes approximately 1 GB of storage.)
(Look in Settings >> General >> iPhone Storage to verify the space you have)
- Set phone on Mute/Aeroplane mode to prevent call ring, notification chime or vibration.
- Open the Compass on your phone (works without any mobile signal when out in the bush.)
- With the compass image showing location, latitude, longitude on the screen, take a screen shot. (Press on the R side on-off button and the Home button at same time.)
- Open the Voice memo app, press the red button to begin recording.
- Clearly state your first name, location, date and beginning time to identify the recording.
- Securely set phone with microphone uncovered, faced outward, protected from wind.
- Move at least 10 metres away so you won't create breathing, talking, rustling noise.
(Use appropriate caution ... don't wander off and leave your phone unattended.)
- Wait for 2 or 4 hours. Take a nap. Read a book. Watch the beauty of nature.
- At the end of the time (after 2 or 4 full hours have elapsed) return to the phone.
- Clearly state your first name, location, date and ending time to finish the recording.
- Tap the red button on the Voice Memo app to stop the recording.

How to complete the recording submission and get paid
- Review the voice memo recording to ensure there are no human sounds or wind noise.
- Verify the recording is 2 or 4 full hours (with a little extra for start/finish statements.)
- Upload the voice memo file and the compass screen shot to Dropbox.
(A Dropbox link for upload will be provided when the proposed recording is agreed.)
- After the recording has been reviewed (2-3 business days), and it is confirmed that it
meets requirements listed above, payment will be made via Paypal.

Please contact Karen at soundproject2019@gmail.com
I look forward to hearing from some of you if this is a match for you!
Recording solicitation ends 31 October 2019.
