Tracks and trails suitable for Hiking prams and chariots

Postby Hisham » Fri 01 Mar, 2019 7:04 pm

I’ve found a few threads that mention chariots (thule) and the like. But nothing that mentions suitable overnight or multi day tracks. Can anyone list or share any info on tracks that would be suitable for pulling a Thule chariot for overnight or multi day hikes?

Trail hiking.com turns up one result when you search for overnight hikes with a pram. https://www.trailhiking.com.au/mt-baw-b ... oom-rocks/ - it doesn’t mention it on the page though.

I’m in Victoria, but if it’s a useful for others, feel free to list them anywhere.

Hi, Hisham,

Parks Victoria usually puts an “Accessibility Document” on the webpage for each park.

Here’s a random example: https://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/park ... essibility

Haven’t spent much time looking at them but they might be a good start.

Thanks. That’s where Parks Vic directed me but it’s not all that helpful. Doesn’t turn up much in relation to walks, particularly overnight

I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you want but the Bellarine rail trail would suit. It's about 35 km so can be done in a day but Glenn Tempest has it written up in one of his old guides as a two day walk using a b&b or similar in Drysdale.

It's not bushwalking as such though, more of a pastoral aspect.

The 56 bus will take you from Geelong station to the start of the walk.

nice one. thanks. I've never seen myself as a rail-trail kinda guy, but they say life changes when you have kids... Will check them out.

I'm guessing camping may not be an option on rail trails? And I've seen a few by the roads - do they leave the roadside in sections?

And always looking for more options.

Do you come to South East Queensland? I think the Border Track in Lamington NP would be suitable, and you can camp or stay in accommodation at either end. It's 21.4 km and a lot of people do it both ways as a two day hike.
There might be a couple of spots where you had to lift the pram over rocks or tree roots (I'm thinking around Dragoon Bird Creek and Bithongabel) but other than that I'd guess it would be okay, though I haven't done it with a pram myself.
Anyway, just a thought.

There are official campsites on the Victorian railtrails I've cycled.

I don't get to SE Qld very often unfortunately! but good to know.

I got this response from Parks on my second attempt (first attempt directed me to the parks locator app thing):

Hi,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The Grampians National Park has a few options however most of the walks that are suitable are not overnight/multiday. I have attached a copy of the Grampians all abilities walking track guide for your information. For further assistance, please call the Grampians local office direct on 03 8427 2058.

There are some sections of the Great Ocean Walk that are accessible. Please refer to the following link for further information - https://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/park ... ocean-walk

Wilsons Promontory National Park has some suitable areas in the southern section of the park however there are areas where the tracks are too narrow and/or rocky which would make it very difficult. Telegraph track, which starts at Telegraph Saddle Car Park and takes you to the lighthouse, is definitely wide enough to accommodate your two wheeled thule chariot.

I hope this information is helpful.

Kind regards,
