A survey on gaiters

Postby eva » Fri 22 Apr, 2016 9:12 pm

Hi,
I'd like to ask you kind folks to fill out this survey on gaiters to let us know how much and what's the main reason they're being used for.

Link to the survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1a35btC0wdkhIhL2ikH4-pq6FJPz9Sn5FPIv2wIcyx3U/viewform

Thank you,
Eva

Project for outdoor ed? the question about newbies needed another option - "Uncertain" "don't know" or "DKDC"

Eva, the question about long or short gaiters should be a multiple choice answer. I use short light gaiters most of the time on trails to keep stones out of my footwear, but also use long gaiters when required in scrub or when snakes are about.

In the first question you have conflated the frequency of use with the type of use. These need to be two separate questions. I use gaiter very rarely and my usage does not relate to track or untracked usage - usually to the amount of mud when in Tasmania or sand on beaches etc..

One questions "When do you wear them" had provision for adding words. Comments could be made there, or in this thread.

Each question should roll into the next. I answered 'no' to the first which made it difficult for me to choose an answer for the following.
Crazy keen tramper / trekker / hiker. Former South Australian. Now, exploring the tracks around Melbourne and Victoria.

Paul, the second and third questions are about length and material, not relevant if gaiters are never worn. The next question asks why you wear gaiters, with the last option “other”. Comments about why gaiters are not worn could go here. The last two questions are about beginners and where you are from. For those that don’t wear gaiters, questions two and three can be skipped. As I said above, more detail can be made in this thread.

I did the survey :)

Pretty easy for me, I always wear full length, heavy duty gaiters in Tassie and encourage everyone to do the same.

Yep I'm the same as you Dan. Even walks with no scrub or mud etc I'll generally wear full length Gaiters as I always seem to see a rocky feature or something catches my attention that I must get to.

I did the survey. Pretty easy I thought.

I wear full length gaiters with shorts whenever I walk.

Interesting.

I wear gaiters rarely, but for different reasons around the country
- off track in Tassie for scrub
- off track in Central Australia for spinifex
- off track in NT/Kimberly to stop grass seeds and the like getting into my socks - and I'll wear sock savers under them

Most of the time in NSW I don't bother, off track or on track. If I know the scrub will be bad I'll probably just wear long pants. Occasionally I might use gaiters as well.

Agree with Mark F - it's about the difference between frequency of use and type of use
