Going to the Movies, Hiking Movie

based on the book "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed
Due for release "Wild" a movie about a woman doing 1,000 miles solo on the Pacific Crest trail.
I picked the book up a year or so ago at Discount Book shop, found it good reading about life as long distance hiker. in fact it got me interested if not inspired to become a born again hiker.

Yep if I can't get out there I really enjoy a movie or some footage of someone else's adventures.
I hope it's not too Hollywood.

Life as a long-distance hiker? She did this one walk, having never gone bush before, stuffed it up majorly, only got through because she was a good looking young bird who the blokes fell over themselves to help, and never did any after. Just another half-arsed wannabe on a spiritual quest.

A good read and had some very funny bits as well as a few moments of uncomfortable familiarity, but it's really about her 'finding herself',not about walking.

I didn't pay much attention to the finding oneself but on the trail you sometimes do. I found the book interesting for its description of life as hiker on the PCT, actually I had never heard of the PCT (Years ago I even visited California, Oregon and Washington state) The read got me hiking again. In all fairness to the writer she never sets herself up as a hiking expert or Guru, she just wrote her hike and life.

Got a free movie ticket and a day off tomorrow so thinking of seeing this. Not interested so much in the 'finding herself' so much as some of the scenery shown in the trailer. Will poat back on my thoughts

I read her book and found it a really good read.

The movie however I didn't enjoy as much. As usual the book is always far better than the movies and I think that made me not enjoy the movie as it lacked the detail. My wife enjoyed the movie...she hasn't read the book.

I found the author competent at describing her life in the city, poor at describing landscapes.

Well havnt read the book but saw the movie. I didnt mind it but for my liking it.focussed too much on her life rather than the walk. I get thats probably the point but i would liked a little less flashback, a little more trail.

Thought the same about the Martin Sheen film "The Way" about the Camina de Santiago. Lots more scenery in "The Sound of Music" and by half way through I was aware that had I been in the group I'd have either pushed them over the nearest cliff or jumped myself.

Been reported that since the release of the movie in USA there has been a 300 % increase of hikers attempting the PCT.

Wonder if we made a movie about the AAWT would get a similar result.

BTW have heard that they are now issuing hiker permits for the PCT, but dont take my word for this

Yep, starting this year they are limiting the amount of people who can start each day to 50. From what I've read in previous years hundreds would start the PCT on april 1, but on march 31st and april 2nd only about 20 people tops would start.

I went to see 'A walk in the woods' today and I thought it very much lacked substance. I didn't think much of it at all.

Saw the Camino movie last week, and just saw Walk in the Woods today for Father's Day. Neither movie was riveting to watch but at least they weren't so bad that they made me think of taking the walk off Our List. Am counting down to Everest and hoping that will it will keep me awake and on edge of my seat. I say 'awake' because I found myself starting to doze off occasionally today as we had a busy weekend and the movie was s l o w. I did enjoy it though, just not a brilliant movie that you have to see on the big screen.

Mmm..... should have had a few AK47 gunfights,at least 3 car chases, with a high speed water pursuit thrown in... ........does not detract anything from the actual great walk... .....

Ooooh yeeeeah.

Not expecting great things of this movie, honestly can't see Redford translating Bryson's humour to the screen. But all the same I'm looking forward to it.

I enjoyed it. Seemed a little disjointed in parts and sometimes a little slow, but all in all it was much better than being at work!

after "Walking the Camino" my wife said "I'd like to do that one day" so it now defaults to 5 STARS !!

Whilst not necessarily a "walking" movie, "Everest" is a truly nerve racking outdoor adventure flick which real climbers will probably pick apart (even in my novice status there were a few misses), but for novices like me it was awesome stuff.

Yeah we enjoyed this as well. Not overly Hollywood. And the Kiwi accents were done well. I wonder if it will be re-dubbed for US audiences.
