Lake Rhona

Tue 25 Sep, 2018 3:16 pm

Anyone been in to Lake Rhona in recent weeks?
Wondering on the state of the log after the winter (and the forestry roads).
Have been in a few years ago and keen to get back!
Cheers.

Not sure how many people head in that way at this time of the year. Someone else likely knows better than me, but I suspect the log would be submerged at this time of year, or at the very least more likely to be submerged.
The road is good for any regular 2wd: I saw a Toyota tarago in there when I last visited in January. It's a windy time of the year, so the only worry would be fallen trees over the road.
All the best! It's a fantastic place!

Haven't been in there for 4 years or so, also wondering if the new route is a bit easier to follow since the tree that blocked the main road in?

Lcham is spot on about the wind. We went in after a windy few days and thankfully had a handsaw in the car as it was needed to cut through several fallen trees. A chainsaw would have made life much easier for at least one of them too.

P&WS have put a couple of signs up directing traffic where to go (eg. up eleven road), but there's still a couple of unmarked turnoffs later on (but I'm pretty sure these are the turnoffs once you're back on the original route).

Pretty sure the route is now Eleven Road, then left onto Gittus Road, which turns onto Range Road, then follows the old route. The last couple of turn offs aren't marked, but they are pretty obvious vehicle tracks to follow.

As for crossing the Gordon, checking out the levels of the Florentine River will give you a good idea of how much water there may be.

The Gordon rises and falls fairly rapidly, so there is a good chance that after a period of 4 or 4 days without significant rain in the catchment, you might get across. Be prepared for a stay on the other side if it rains heavily while you are there though.

Thank you all for the advice! :)
We are hoping to get out there in the next few weeks (weather dependent). Will post back if we do!

Definitely keen to hear how you find things :-)

Has anyone been recently or know what the current (no pun intended) levels are like?

There is a bit of rain forecast this week, up to 15ml for Strahan on Wednesday and not sure how much it takes to make the crossing impassable.

Hoping to get out there sometime this month if possible

How much damage has been done to the World Heritage Area around Lake Rhona with the the current large fire in the area?

There's a thread dedicated to the fire. Go and read it.
