devoswitch wrote:Hi all, I'm heading into Rhona just before Easter but only have one night/2days of walking. I would really like to get up to Reids peak etc but would I have time? Was thinking of walking in and camping and next morning first light I'd head up Reids with a daypack and then back down pack up and out. Doable?
Also does anyone know what road access is like at the moment?
Thanks :)

A friend just walked in via RCT yesterday so I assume the road is fine. A big cpl days. Perhaps camp on the range and bypass Rhona? Otherwise I'd summit early on day 2 with fresher legs. The promise of hot food/cold beer will get you out that evening...Pack light I guess...

Thanks for that SBS. I guess I'll just see how I feel. I'm going to be heading off first light so will assess my legs when I get up to Rhona. Maybe I can enjoy a sunset up on Reids and back down by torch light?

It's easy enough to follow the track at night if you are comfortable with that. I'll always throw some waypoints down on my GPS at night. Good luck!

Yeah I'm very comfortable with that. I have two very young children and have to squeeze any op' for a walk, so I often start my walks/climbs at 3/4am so I can be back at lunchtime to help out with the lil ones.
Good to know its a distinguishable track. Thanks again SBS.

The roads were fine just over a week ago. Range & Terry Walch's are a little overgrown, but negotiable. I'd be more concerned about the river crossing.

Thanks NNW. I'm hoping river will be fine too. Surely though with the dry weather we've been getting it should be fine. I'll carry a couple of days food extra and stash it on western side of the river just in case

Make sure you stash it well away from the river. The water can rise quite a long way up into the surrounding bush.

Walked into Rhona yesterday morning. Wow... What a spectacular place! My GPS told me it'd be a 5:40min drive from my house (Franklin, huon valley) to the trailhead. I left my place at 3 am and was sitting at the track in my car at 6am. Started walking not long after and was at the lake just after 11am. (This includes following the rasselas track South at the junction for about 1km before realising the "track" I was following should be more worn than it was. Decided To head up Reeds Peak and Giant Dome for the afternoon. Woke up this morning and watched the sunrise from a nice rock and had breakfast just before I dropped back down off the range and was back at the car 4hrs later.

I can't believe I haven't been there before now and I'll definitely be heading back there soon.

Had the place to myself for the afternoon and night, couldn't ask for much more :)

It's certainly a very special place. I'll be back there one day too.

Weird. A red Nallo, pitched in exactly the same spot I pitched MY red Nallo. And I also had the place to myself. Four days and not a human to be seen once I left the carpark . . . :D

Which reminds me - can somebody notify the relevant ranger (presumably at Mt Field) that the Richea Creek log book is full and overflowing. Even the covers have been filled. New book needed NOW!

Yeah you're not wrong. I had a quick flick through it I think it went back to December. I consider myself fairly lucky I got the place to myself!
