Cockburn ranges information

Postby stephen_h » Sun 06 May, 2018 5:25 pm

Hi,

Does anyone have any information on walking in Cockburn Ranges (off Gibb River road)? Someone I recently met hiking in Tassie advised there is some hiking through the area but did not have any personal experience.

Will be spending a few months in NT and eastern WA from June hiking. Both day and multi-day walks. Have on the list Larapinta (parts of), Table Top and spending few nights walking into Picanniny gorge in the Bungle bungles. Photos of the Cockburn Range look enticing and would love to get in there.

Have off track hiking experience, though mainly in Vic and Tassie mountains...

Thanks

I haven’t walked the cockburn ranges, but lived in the Kimberley and traveled to all the remote areas from Kununurra to Derby.

It is a punishing and unforgiving place. You’d have to choose the time of year very carefully, and have several contingency plans for all eventualities.

We did much of the south Cockburns in 2015 - photos and vague description at http://ozultimate.com/tom/bushwalking/2 ... photos.htm

Not sure if it is still the case, but South Cockburn is part of El Questro, so you need to arrange permission and pay fees to go in there.
