Private property access - Mt Castle and Mt Moon

Thu 10 Aug, 2017 2:55 pm

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to get in contact with the landholders backing onto Mt Castle summit and Mt Moon in the Scenic Rim?

I'm told that once you contour west from Boar's Head to reach Mt Castle summit you end up leaving the national park and get onto private property.

Has anyone done either of these two recently? I'm most interested in Mt Castle, but intrigued also by Mt Moon after driving past it a lot lately.

Thanks for any assistance!

Access from east or west of Mt Castle & Mt Moon will need permission.
Local NP rangers should have the landowners info, there's a office/ home
at Cunninghams Gap & just outside Boonah(can't find there phone
numbers though) or maybe leave a query on their website.

Access from Sylvester's lookout you doesn't need any permission...as far as I know.

The Private property with access to Mt Moon has been sold recently...no permission or agreements are in place with the new owners...yet.
N.Parks are working on it. 8)
No access to Mt Moon.

Thanks for the heads up, I was also curious.
The unsealed road that leads off Dwyer Ridges Road in a westerly direction (just before it crosses Alford Creek), is that private? It seems to lead towards the mountain.

Mmm, that sounds like Titmarsh Rd, I went for a look-see along it a while ago & asked the ranger about access this week, but it's no go from there too.

On a semi-related note (same general area), does anyone know anything about access to Mount Dumaresq, in Mount Dumaresq Conservation Park near Maryvale? The Mount Gay section appears to be accessibly by public road, but the Mount Dumaresq section does not.
Are the adjacent landowners approachable regarding access? A friend is interested in climbing it.

I've noticed that lovely ridge running beside the highway many times...no info to help you though.

Many thanks for getting back.
Weird isn't it, no-one seems to know a thing about it. I hadn't specially noticed it until said friend mentioned it; he's a Cunningham buff, read that Cunningham climbed it and was interested in checking it out himself.
I might suggest he tries the MR Parks people. I'm keen now!

I satisfied my curiosity with a few visits to that range which includes Mt.Gay. Enough to have not bothered again for at least ten years now.
I do recall noting that the forestry road on the ridge east of Mt.Gay needed to be visited outside of the season for cobblers pegs. The ridge to the saddle with Mt.Dumaresq is riddled with treefall. Mostly from storms etc. It is cattle country but the going is not clear and straightforward. Alot of weaving and stepping over trees.
Maybe a fire has helped there since. It just isn't often visited. I stopped short at ascending Dumaresq as it looked even worse and didn't seem to offer much in the way of views.
I had the good fortune to conduct a club daywalk on Mt.Moon back in about 2001. One of our members had a relative with adjacent land. I don't ever expect to do it again.
I just thought i would gloat about that.

The last visit i made to Mt.Gay was following the property boundary from the road on the north to the north ridge. As a daywalk we went to Freestone Ck nth and did a bike leg back to the car.
Another route was a circuit from the south, over Mt.Gay and around to the saddle with Dumaresq.

Our route over Mt.Moon was from the south, along the ridge to the peak on the west. Through the saddle to go over the main peak with a contour back around the southeast side of the mountain.

As for Mt.Castle. The farmer at the head of laidley valley will deny you access through the farm. He has no problem with you following the property boundary up to Grass Tree Knob on the Little Liverpool Range. You can then follow the range to Mt.Castle. I have many times travelled along the range from Mt.Beau Brummel. My first complete Scenic rim traverse was from Beau Brummel. Kangaroo Mtn is rather special and so is the traverse over to Mt.Castle. The same farmer has the cattle lease on Mt.Castle.
In recent times I have more frequently done a circuit up to Boars Head from the east. Over Mt.Castle and out again via the saddle with Kangaroo Mtn.
