Bilborough Trig to Cougals and beyond

Hi Guys,

I've been planning a walk from the Bilborough Trig on Springbrook through to Garden of Eden carpark with an overnight stop at the Mt Cougal west peak campsite for some months and this last weekend we gave it a go.

Bilborough trig is easy to get to via either of the two service tracks to the transmission towers from the end of Bilborough Crt, the RH one is a nicer grade. The trig has been partially cleared a year or so ago and was easy to find, from there though the forest is thick and unfriendly with no tracks and no assistance save an active turkey mound near the end of the point.
It took about 1.5h to make our way down from the trig to the east-most edge of the Springbrook escarpment and found a suitably large tree growing mid-way down a suitable cleft however the terrain is 45deg and loose with much of the overlying strata friable or fractured. Several large 3'dia. boulders were dislodged and crashed into the canopy below.
We roped and scrambled down to where we were to descend however casting the rope was problematic with the horizontal tree canopy and after an hour we decided to call it a day and returned back to the cars.

It appears to be approx 60-80m from the anchor point to the next bench down however no clear view of the drop could be made and the cleft was not pleasant to move around in. The canopy below showed a mix of eucalypt and rainforest species and was more open than the Springbrook plateau.

We will definitely be back to ascertain the escarpment drop from the point and we will also investigate the steep gully that descends due south from the Bilborough transmission towers that may also allow egress from the plateau.
